ew Year Resolutions are the goals that people set up for the coming year to improve themselves and their lives. They set up these goals and follow through, hopefully through out the year. Some people succeed. Some people forget all about the resolution a month later. I guess it is because Americans are more goal-oriented that’s why they come up with these things.
Personally, I’m not a big fan of having New Year resolutions. Well, I never seem to be able to keep them up (slacker!), and I believe that you can have a resolution any time of year. Nonetheless, through the 7 years I have been here, I have set up so many resolutions in order to making my life in America easier and more fun. Here are some of them.
I was known as the quiet one in high school. I was very insecure about my English even though I knew in my heart that I could do well. And that fear reflected on my confidence in general. I felt very insecure about myself far more than just my English. To improve that, I watched more television to get a hold of how people pronounce things. I subscribed to teen magazines to catch up with the trends, and what girls my age are talking about. Then I started talking to myself in English, just for practice. (Hey, I am NOT crazy!) It took me all my first year to finally feel comfortable, and started to speak out, and I haven’t shut up since! I learned so much by participating in class discussion, and in turn share my knowledge with others. Besides, college classes, especially at graduate level, your participation counts for your grades.
Attempt something that you have never done before. Take classes you always wanted to take like theater, music, or art, which are usually available for 1-2 units. Be active in your Thai club and international student organization. Join some other clubs of your interests too. Being in clubs give you opportunity to meet new people, make new friends, and expand your horizon. Besides, the more you get involved, the more confidence you have, and the less time you have to be homesick. I took theater class in high school, and in turn joined drama club, volunteered to be stage crew, and ended up playing Woodstock in a musical “Snoopy!” Ever since, I can’t seem to stop participating in clubs! Now that I am working most of the time and going to class at night, my social life has turned to co-workers, friends who live close by, and online friends around the world. I still go out and do something new once in a while, like dressing up as Leelu from “The Fifth Element” (the orange suspender, NOT the tape) and walked down West Hollywood Halloween Carnival, or going Frisbee-golfing with a bunch of friends in Northern California. Still, staying in touch with people and remaining active help past the time, make connections, and give you more experience. |

Working out and eating healthy have always been my mantra since I get to college. (I tried the 11pm bedtime, but that never works.) With all the things I was doing in college, I had to keep my energy level high. Adding a little bit of muscles to your body is great. Being athletic is a good thing here. I used to work out daily when I was an undergraduate, but now I only have enough time to do some push-ups and crunches in the morning, and join my friend at his Tae Kwon Do school once or twice a week. Working out makes me feel great about my body, and therefore I don’t have to worry much about food. I love food. I enjoy food. I won’t give up the joy of tastes and pleasure of flavors for the sake of eating low-fat or low-calorie. I believe in moderation, not starvation. I balance out my meals. It is easy to succumb to the calling of fries, burgers, chocolate, and ice cream in this country. I have been eating too much junk food lately myself because I am too lazy to cook, but I stayed clear of candies, sweets, and deserts, and eating more salad when I have the choice. My goal is too eat less of the grease and more of the greens. I know that these resolutions sound very simple. It is something that anyone can do anywhere in the world, not just for Thai student studying in the U.S. But these things help me coping with my adjustment and transition periods, from Thailand to American high school, and from high school to college. Ultimately, these resolutions make you feel good about yourself, and that is the key. Once you feel good, you have confidence. When you have confidence, you can do anything. And when you can do anything, your life is a lot more fun. Oh and one last thing. You heard it from Dead Poet Society when Robin Williams said, “Carpe diem. Seize the day. Make your life extraordinary.” Make carpe diem—seize the day—your motto. So go on out there, and make the new year of your life the grand adventure!
