Part 3: Jack & Karen
Jack was aroused from his sleep by a nurse who was shaking him gently. When he opened his eyes, she whispered, "You have a phone call from a Mr. Will Truman. He says it's urgent."
Jack woke up immediately and left the room. As soon as he picked up the phone, he heard Will's frantic breathing.
"Will?" Jack asked. No sooner had he said that, when Will began talking.
"Jack, you won't believe it, you were right!" Will exclaimed. "Karen's attack was planned! By Stan!"
Jack felt his mouth drop open. Even though Stan had been a brute lately, especially to Karen, he would have never thought-
"Jack, someone told Stan that Karen was having an affair and was going to take him to the cleaners," Will explained. "Next thing you know, he created this elaborate scheme, hiring a hit man to kill her. And we have it all on tape."
When Jack still didn't say anything, Will continued.
"Jack, look, although we don't think he's going to attack tonight, you have to keep an eye on Karen, just in case," Will finished.
"Uh, yeah, of course," Jack said after a moment. "Uh, but Will, she's going into surgery in about two hours."
"What? What surgery?" Will asked.
"Well, someone donated some blood, I guess, so she's going to get better a lot faster," Jack said in an offhanded sort of way. Will sensed that this 'someone' was him. "What do I do then?"
"Well, she'll be fine in surgery," Will said. "Grace'll be there after her surgery, so you can, uh, rest I guess and she'll take over."
"What are you two going to do?" Jack asked.
"We're heading over to the chief of police right now," Will told him. "We'll play him the tape and see what happens. Unless Stan bribed him too."
"Okay," Jack said. Now he was keeping a careful watch of the door to Karen's room. The two said goodbye and Jack rushed into Karen's room, afraid he'd find some knife wielding maniac standing above her. Instead, he was relieved to find her alone.
As he sat back down, Karen's eyes opened and she stared up happily at his face.
"Hi, poodle," she said.
"How're you feeling?" Jack asked, holding her hand.
"Better," she said. Even her voice sounded stronger. "Anything interesting happen while I was asleep?"
They both knew what she meant.
"Uh, well, yes, actually," Jack said. God, this was going to be tough. And it's not like he'd had any time to prepare what he was going to say. But how do you tell someone her husband tried to have her killed? He looked into Karen's trusting eyes and felt a pang of guilt. He should have seen this coming, he should have done something, he-
But no, now was not the time to be worrying about this. He bit his lip, looked at Karen, and said, "Kare, there's something very serious I need to tell you. You're not gonna like it and I can assure you I will do all in my power to protect you. Will and Grace are at the police station right now talking to the police chief about the....attacker."
"So, this is a pretty important thing, huh?" Karen asked. She sat up, painfully, but it gave Jack the knowledge that she was strong enough to take it. She looked at him and whispered, "Who was it, poodle, who attacked me?"
Jack paused, then said, "We're not really sure. But...we know who told them to do it."
Karen looked at him curiously.
"Told them to do it?" she repeated. "Who told them to do what?"
Jack took a breath, then looked directly into Karen's eyes.
"Stan told them to kill you," he said.
The look on Karen's face was enough to get Jack to quickly sit beside her on the bed and hug her. It was a look of shock, disbelief, betrayal and outrage.
"Stan thought you were cheating on him and were going to take all his money, so he hired someone to kill you," he said as gently as he could. "But Will and Grace managed to get it all on tape and soon, very soon, this'll all be done."
"Done?" Karen asked. "How can it be done? My husband tried to kill me! What's to stop him from doing it again?"
"Hon, you can divorce him, he'll go to jail, and you can live a life of luxury without him," Jack said, kissing her. Karen nodded solemnly, but Jack sensed that she didn't believe him.
"And in the meantime, you'll be safe here. I won't let anything happen to you," he said, holding her close.
"Oh, poodle, what would I do without you?" she asked. She rested her head on his shoulder as tears streamed down her face. The two sat in silence for a minute until Karen spoke, "Well, I guess it's not all bad."
"What do you mean?" Jack asked.
"Well, like you said, Stan will probably go to jail and I'll get a good amount from alimony," she said. She paused, thinking. "But I don't want to live alone."
She turned to Jack. He was smiling sweetly at her. She remembered all the good times they'd had. Shopping, talking, going out to lunch, insulting Grace's wardrobe. He was her best and closest friend, her poodle, her sweetie, her honey, her Jack. Finally, she said, "Jack honey, how would you like to live with me once this whole thing blows over?"
The look on Jack's face was enough. Without him even having to say yes, the two embraced and sat together for a while, talking. Finally, about an hour later, the nurse asked Jack to come with her to prepare for surgery.
"Surgery?" Karen asked. "What surgery, poodle?"
Jack shrugged.
"Oh, just donating some blood," he said as he closed the door. Karen felt her spirits life. She knew what he was talking about and she couldn't have loved him for it any more than she already did.
Epilogue
One Year Later...
Karen and Jack returned home, carrying tons of bags from all the poshest and most expensive stores. They tossed the bags on a nearby table and headed towards the kitchen when the phone rang. Karen crossed the room and picked up the cordless. After a moment, she rolled her eyes at Jack, indicating that it was Grace on the other end. After a moment, Karen said, "Okay, yeah, sure honey. Okay, buh-bye."
She turned back to Jack and rolled her eyes again.
"Grace has got to get out more," Karen muttered, walking over to the bags and opening one. She pulled out a sweater and held it against her and she talked. "All she ever does is complain. 'Where are my fabrics? Why don't you answer the phone? Why didn't you show up for work today?' Blah, blah, blah."
Jack grinned. He was so happy to be living with Karen, his best friend, and to have her back to her regular self. After the attack, she had been a little weary about going out in public alone or being by herself. She practically clung to Jack during the first few months. Then as time wore on, she became more self confident, but thankfully was still wanting to spend time with Jack. On another up side for Jack, he was currently involved in a relationship with a cute doctor that was going very well. And Stan was locked away where he could never hurt Karen again.
Karen turned and looked at Jack.
"Hey, Poodle, do you want to go out to dinner tonight? Just the two of us?"
Jack couldn't hold back his smile.
"I'd love to," he said.
With that, he took Karen by the arm and the two walked out of their apartment, happier than they'd ever been before.
