Ooops, did I say this was 'Basic Training'? What I meant to call it was "How to not be an annoying noob"

I'll start off with the obligatory Top 10 things a new player should know, copied word for word from the Free Allegiance website - then I'll get into the real nitty gritty.
There is a lot of reading here. Get used to it, this game is complex. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

Here are 10 things you should be aware of before playing Allegiance:

1. Allegiance is the most fun game in the world at a price: STEEP learning curve, steeper than most games. If you don't enjoy working for your entertainment, this game might not be for you.

2. Allegiance is a competitive TEAM-based game. Players must work together to complete goals, and commanders may eject players who are not contributing to their teams to make space for other players that will.

3. All new players will have a number appended to their name for the first few weeks. This is your rank and shows everyone that you are new and may not know how to do things yet. The more you play, the faster it will climb. Once your rank reaches 8, you are no longer a newbie. If you try to play on a newbie-only server you will be automatically banned by the system for 24 hrs. You have been warned!

4. It is strongly recommended to remap the default keys to something comfortable for you. *NEVER* use the keyboard to fly! Always use your mouse, or a joystick if you prefer. The keyboard should supplement your primary input device.

5. The Allegiance Community has dedicated a LOT of time into helping everyone play Allegiance. Make use of the "Read Me First" posts, the F1 screens ingame, the @Cadet program, the @ACS command school, and of course The Academy.

6. The training missions help a little, but the best way to spend offline time to learn the game is the "Crash Course" on The Academy.

7. After training, learn basic gameplay and technology on the Newbie servers. Learn how to contribute to a team and how to use the technology. Once you've mastered the basics, join the vets and don't look back. If you try to play a game on the newbie server with a rank 8 or above, the system will automatically ban you for 24 hrs. You've been warned twice now!

8. Do not join a real game if you want to "figure out the controls" or "try a bomber." That is what all of the other empty servers are for. (Including Newbie servers, if you are rank < 8). Only join real games if you want to contribute to your team.

9. Games with an imbalanced skill level between the two teams are NOT fun. If you're new, don't join the team with lots of other new players! If you're skilled, don't join the team with all of the @Squad players. Stacking the skill on one side removes the fun for 2/3 of the players.

10. As with all communities, Allegiance has "good apples" and "bad apples." Don't let the bad ones ruin your fun.

Nitty Gritty

#1 - Play the training missions. Sure, they're kinda long and kinda slow - but they teach you everything you need to know to play Allegiance, from firing weapons to managing cargo to sending private messages in-game.

#2 - Realise that the training missions suck and they don't teach you much at all.
They're like learning everything you need to know about how to drive a car ... and not a single thing about the Road Code. Here's the short version of "the Road Code":

To win a game of Allegiance, you need to destroy the enemys' bases. To do that you need superior
technology. The main goal therefore is to defend your miners and escort your constructers; and to do
your best to destroy the enemy's miners and constructers.

#3 - The F1 menu in-game has recently been updated. Use it, it answers a stupidly large amount of questions you may have.

#4 - Learn to read the mini-map
Everything your team can see is displayed on the mini-map, if you know how to read it. One of my personal pet peeves is noobs informing the team that "There is 2 fighters in Eleesh and 1 Scout", or an "Enemy outpost in Aegis" - yes, thankyou, I can see that; shut up and stop cluttering the chat please.
This and this are two crash courses on the Allegiance Academy that teach you how to use the minimap.

#5 - Read through the Crash Courses on the Allegiance Academy, and join the community-run Cadet Course (you get a private subforum with other Cadets and Instructers).

#6 - Don't spam Voice-chats
It's really fucking annoying!

#7 - Don't ask for ships that cost money!
The team Commander controls all the money, if he decides it's a waste of money to give you a bomber to go fly circles in, then don't keep pestering him for one!

#8 - Don't stop donating to the commander so that you can afford a ship that costs money!
It's a bit of a mystery really, how noobs find that 'Stop Donating' button so quickly ...
Less of a mystery is how often they get kicked out of the game for using it.

#9 - Don't follow orders blindly.
As a noob, you will have a number displayed after your username, starting at zero and going up to 5 as you progress in ranks. At 6, it disapears. The point is, seeing that number a lot of players will view you as their personal slave and will you will be spammed with orders, to attack this guy - no wait, pick up that item - actually, goto this random waypoint - No! Attack this other guy on the other side of the map!
Ignore most of them. If unsure, simply ask what the point of following the order is.

Always follow the ones that come from your Commander though!

#10 - The most important keys to have bound to easy-to-reach keys are, IMO:

Targetting:
Target enemy bomber, Target friendly bomber, Target enemy base, Target friendly base
Target enemy constructer, Target friendly constructer, Target enemy miner
Target friendly miner, Target hostile (will target anyone targetting you), Target nearest enemy, Target lifepod.

Cargo management:
Swap Weapon 1, Swap Missiles, Swap Sheild, Swap Mines
Swap Cloak, Rotate cargo, Eject primary cargo.

Dogfighting:
Side thrust (all 6 directions), Target center, Deploy chaff
Deploy mines, Roll left, Roll right, Boost, Reload.
