Chapter 2

I am thoroughly enjoying this book. It has been 10 years since I read a fantasy, and that's too long. The language is so colorful. The way King describes situations tickles me! Example:

"Four days later, the coronation of Roland was held in the Plaza of the Needle. The juggler did not see it; he had been beheaded on the executioner's block behind the Needle three days before that."

Chapter 14

I like the writing style of king in this book, he adds much humor, and it is quite easy to read (my daughter is also reading it, and she is 8).

It amused me the way the king handled his young bride, (ie "kings iron") and that it is obscure enough for my daughter not to quite get it, you know what I mean??

Sasha was a good mother, who wanted to teach her child proper manners and felt it even more important to do so because he would one day be king, rather than let him do as he pleased for the same reason.

I also was glad that the king went against flagg and allowed peter to continue to play with the castle.

Chapter 14

I agree with you about Sasha. I think it's going to be very bad for Peter that she died. That whole chapter about the napkin was touching. You reminded me I was going to post a passage about men and dogs(?). Have to wait until I get home ...

Chapter 25

Boy, Roland sure was thoughtless about Thomas's ship. I couldn't believe what he said about it! Made me so mad. Now poor Thomas is messed up for life! He can't do anything for his father without thinking it will be wrong. I feel so sorry for him.

I am not a parent, but I am wondering how hard it is not to play favorites. I feel there is favoritism in my family, and I always say that I won't do that with my kids. But is it inevitable?

well i having been reading eyes of the dragon. What a great book- i had no clue S. King wrote fantasy. I agree with you Nat- the stuff with the boat was a huge factor in Thomas's life. My god - how could Roland be so cruel!!! NO wonder Thomas doesnt fight what happens to Peter later, he was so jealous.

Chapter 45

Here's a passage I enjoyed. It's a very powerful description of Peter's ascent into the tower:

"A door to the left of the great courtroom led into a narrow hallway. The hallway stretched perhaps 40 paces, and then the stairs began. They wound up and up, around and around, all the way to the top of the Needle, where the two rooms Peter would live in henceforth, until the day he died, awaited him. There were 300 stairs in all. We will come to Peter at the top, in his rooms, and in good time, his story, as you will see, is not done. But we will not climb with him, because it is a climb of shame, leaving his rightful place as King at the bottom and marching, shoulders back and head erect, toward his place as prisoner of the Kingdom at the top - it would not be kind to follow him or any man on such a walk."

Chapter 49

I am so disappointed in Thomas. I wanted him to tell the truth about his father's murder so bad. I want him to be good! I hope Flagg doesn't ruin him completely.

Another passage:
"In the years ahead, the nightmare sometimes came again - his father accusing his hidden, spying son and then doubling over, smoking, his hair on fire. In those years, Thomas discovered two things: guilt and secrets, like murdered bones, never rest easy; but the knowledge of all three can be lived with."
Let me also add: what a grusome way for Roland to die! What detail King gave us - yuck!!!

Finished

What a great story! I was about halfway done this morning, and couldn't hardly put it down all day. I love finishing a great book, and I'm a sucker for happy endings. And I am so happy about Thomas, although sad that he had to go. But I knew he would do the right thing in the end.

From Ch. 110 - I totally agree with the narrator:
"He was sometimes a cruel boy, often a sad boy, this pretend king, and he had almost always been a weak boy ... but even now I must tell you that I do not believe he was ever really a bad boy. If you hate him because of the things he did - and the things he allowed to be done - I will understand; but if you do not pity him a little, I will be surprised."
Thanks to whomever suggested we read this fantastic book, and thanks to Dee for this club that introduced me to fantasy.

Also, just wondering if there has ever been a continuation of this story - it ends like there might be someday, if not already.
