Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)
Lyrics by Billie Joe Armstrong
Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road
Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go
So make the best of this test and don't ask why
It's not a question, but a lesson learned in time
It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right
I hope you had the time of your life
So take the photographs and still frames in your mind
Hang it on a shelf in good health and good time
Tattoos of memories and dead skin on trial
For what it's worth, it was worth all the while
It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right
I hope you had the time of your life
Meaning: I think this song is about something that happens in your life that you don't like. And this song is telling you to live it up because there are always reasons for why things happen. You shouldn't worry and just make it the time of your life instead of letting it drag you down. I am not sure of what "photographs and still frames in your mind" might mean, but I do know what "tattoos of memories" means. Those are memories that stay with you forever. Guanqing and I have pondered about what "dead skin on trial" could mean. Right now we've reached the consensus that it means dead people put as evidence in a court case. Which doesn't fit the song, so it's probably wrong. Whoa, that rhymes. I have another theory that makes more sense. Whenever you're down, you might feel like you're dead. And the trial part is your problem, whatever is dragging you down.
Why? This is an awesome song that almost everyone would like. If this is the first Green Day song you listen to, you would never guess that they're punk. This is one of the songs that have helped widened the punk horizon, in my opinion. It has really good lyrics, one of Billie Joe's greatest works, and it's about something that everyone can relate to. I don't have one specific favorite Green Day song, but this song is one that I really like.
