Kerry Dunkley was one of Re:Actives original volunteers. Despite having a full time day job, and a son of her own, she gave up 2 evenings a week to help to provide young people with somewhere safe and off the streets. Sadly Kerry became ill not long after, and she died on 25th June 2004 aged 42. Kerry was a well known figure around South Wigston and worked as a barmaid in the grand Hotel on Canal street for many years, she also worked at RF Brookes and later at Initial in South Wigston.
Re:Active volunteer worker Jo, and 2 members, Laura and Tasha, ran the race for life in July 2005 in memory of Kerry. Laura and Tasha ran it again in 2006.
Kerry was a wonderful person and a great friend to have. She touched the lives of many people, and will be missed and remembered for a very long time to come.

Re:Active Youth Club Thanks to funding secured through Oadby & Wigston Borough Council, Re:Active has now re-opened at the Bassett Centre on Bassett Street, South Wigston. Every Friday from 7pm to 9pm
Free to all young people age 10 upwards. Re:Active first opened on 10th February 2003 and was funded by a Positive People Award from the Leicester Mercury. It was set up and ran by parents and volunteers in order to provide a safe indoor venue for young people to meet their friends and socialise, it was originally a 12 week project, opening twice a week, to assess the need for a youth facility, and to find out what young people wanted and needed in the area. It was so clearly needed that we applied to the Local Network fund to purchase more equipment, so we could continue to run the sessions after the initial 12 weeks.
Re:Active was supported by Su Lincoln and the United Reformed Church on Canal Street South Wigston, where the sessions were ran from, rent free until 2008, when the United Reformed Church closed for demolition to make way for South Leicestershire College's new College.
Thanks to funding from the Local Network Fund we were able to provide Dance and football sessions in 2005.
Football sessions took place on Blaby Road Park during the Easter break. |
