The southern river otter is much rarer than its cousin, the northern river otter. Because of over hunting and habitat destroying, the population of the southern river otter has majorly declined since the white man discovered them. Today's southern river otters reside in the southwestern regions of Chili and Argentina and, like the Northern River Otter, live in fresh-water habitats.
