Now that everything was back to normal in Milwaukee and the nation, Agent Johnson felt the need to return to the monotonous routine. Currently, he was on a routine inspection to see if a house on 20th Street was trafficking illegal narcotics. After he and the two officers came up empty-handed at the investigation, Johnson went to take the bus back to the office. The team’s only car was in the garage for an oil check, so everyone but Bionic had to take the bus. As Mark walked the freezing distance to the next stop, he heard a vehicle slowly approach behind him. He looked back and saw it was a van with tinted windows trailing at his speed about ten yards away. It was probably simply a person waiting to pull into their driveway. Mark continued walking. As he came to the corner and walked into the street, the vehicle sped up and swerved toward the agent. Johnson agilely jumped up and landed temporarily on the moving van’s hood. He then jumped off of it and landed in a roll on the front lawn of a house. The van continued its path and ran onto another lawn, knocking down a fence and a street sign. As Johnson stood up, he witnessed the van veer back onto the street and drive hastily down the road, nearly hitting a few other cars. Agent Johnson quickly contacted Frink via his earpiece. “A black van attempted vehicular manslaughter . . .,” he said between gasps, “. . . on me. Any agents or officers in the area should . . . respond immediately. The first three digits of the license are 316.” Johnson ran to catch up with the speeding van, but it was already far down the road. Mark slowed to a stop and panted. He’d never catch it. Then he heard the revving engines and blaring siren of a familiar Harley. *** “Someone attempted a hit-n-run on Johnson. Bionic, please respond,” Frink said over Bionic’s helmet-earpiece. “I’m on my way!” Bionic yelled jauntily. He flicked on his siren and squeezed in between two cars at the stoplight. He then sped across the street, easily dodging a semi traveling perpendicular to him. He turned on the next street and traveled a few more blocks until he hit 20th. He turned once again and drove down the street. Soon enough, he could see Agent Johnson. He drove up besides the agent and asked, “Need a lift?” *** Agent Johnson hopped on. “You drive. I’ll shoot.” He then put on Bionic’s spare helmet and pointed Bionic in the direction of the fleeing vehicle. As the agents sped off, Johnson drew his Berreta. He held on tightly to the bike as Bionic sped up and dodged traffic. Soon, they caught up with the turning truck. They followed it onto a highway ramp, Johnson firing his sidearm a few times at it. Cars around them swerved in fear or abruptly halted, causing Bionic to have to dodge more than a few SUVs. Despite these obstacles, they quickly caught up to the truck on the highway. Johnson carefully emptied his large handgun at the truck, leaving holes in its rear and shattering its taillights. Now cars were becoming a huge obstacle for Bionic and Johnson. Suddenly, the driver of the black truck Johnson was pursuing skewed into the next lane. This placed it directly in front of a semitrailer. That semi then braked and spun in front of Bionic’s motorcycle. “Hold on,” yelled Bionic. He sharply rotated his Harley 90 degrees and pushed his weight back. This caused the cycle to almost fall sideways if not for the inertia pushing it forward. The bike went straight under the trailer of the semi-truck. Now Johnson could see a squad car in the other lane. It tried to maneuver closer to the black truck that they were following while dodging traffic. As Bionic straightened the Harley up, Johnson reloaded his Berreta. While the agent did this, the black van turned about 45 degrees to the left and rammed into the sidewall of the highway. Or at least, it appeared to do this. It apparently simply vanished. There was no explosion, no remains, no hole in the wall. It was as if it had drove into a portal leading it to another dimension. Bionic remembered his first encounter with a black truck and its disappearing crew. He muttered, “Not this time,” and spun his Harley around, into the oncoming traffic. He drove straight at the point where the truck had disappeared. “Agent Bionic, what are you– ?” Agent Johnson yelled into his earpiece. Before he could finish the statement, Bionic contacted the sidewall. Or at least he should have. Home Adventure Archive |
