WHEATUS bestanden am Anfang nur aus Brendan, Pete und einem Bassisten. Später kam Phil hinzu nachdem er sich Teenage Dirtbag angehört hatte. Er fügte dem Sound Banjo etc. hinzu. Nach fertigstellung des ersten Albums wurde der Bassist durch Mike ersetzt. Ihre Debütsingle "Teenage Dirtbag" wurde in England und Australien ein Nummer-Eins-Hit. In Deutschland wäre es das wohl auch geworden, aber leider kam die Single in Deutschland erst so spät und stieg auch erst auf Platz 80 oder so ein. Sie kletterte bis auf Platz 2, aber leider waren NO ANGLES oder CRAZY TOWN etwas besser. Die Single hielt sich mehrere Monate in den TOP-20, ein Jahresplatz ist also nicht ausgeschlossen. Das Album "Wheatus" stieg auf Platz 56 ein, es stieg aber bis auf Platz 16, es hatte aber immer ein auf und ab-Spiel. Mit "A little Respect" wollen sie an den Erfolg anknöpfen...

Es ist so als würdest du ein 3 Card Monte Duell gewinnen wenn die Plattenfirma dir und deiner Band eine selbstproduzierte Platte abkauft und diese Vervielfältigt. So kommt Wheatus. "Wir wollten eine CD selbst machen!" sagt Brendan B. Brown, der Sänger, Gitarrist und Songschreiber. Und so machten sie's.Aber was macht WHEATUS so besonders?
Primäre Lieder. "Wheatus mischt Pop/Rock mit punk/street Elementen," sagt Rich Leigey, der Bassist. "Periode." Eier-raus, gerade-aus, angepisst und abgeschrieben. Schmerzen treffen auf Humor. "TEENAGE DIRTBAG" ist das wohl Liebeslied das je komponiert wurde! Und "Love Is A Mutt From Hell," ist ein sonic sling-shot strike mit Romantik. Und der coole Pap-Folk-Song "Wannabe Gangsta."
Aber so kam das Trio nicht aus den Startlöchern. Aktuell kommen sie aus Long Island, New York. Brendan, der AC/DC-Willie & Nelson-Prince-Madonna Verherrlicher, und Rich, welcher in und außerhalb des Drecks war und Hardcorebands seit seiner Jugend mochte. Sie mussten gemeinsam zur Arbeit gehen.
Jetzt kommt der Punkt der Wheatus so spektakulär macht. "Es komm der Punkt wo du sagst, 'Ich bin lieber dumm und mache Fehler als für jedermanns scheiße dazusein'" meint Brenden. Rather than soured by the demise of a previous ensemble, he took the knowledge gained (not to mention the cash) and made a run for the border of artistic freedom. "The experience was monumental in terms of how to make a record--we were in the studio all the time--and the money I made from it was spent on gear," he says. "I started writing songs for me. I consider this my first heartfelt creative effort." Seine Methode war unkonventinel. "Jeder Song war eine Idee bevor es ein Song war--der Titel kam zuerst und die Geschichte folgte," erklärt Brendan. "Das ist mein Lieblingsweg Stoff zu machen--der Titel ist eine "blueprint" für das Lied." Die snotty-but-sweet single, für Instanz: "Ich wollte ein Lied schreiben namens 'Teenage Dirtbag' so nahm ich alles was es für mich bedeutete--ein pickeliger Junge mit eine Scmalzmähne welcher nicht viele Freunde hatte." Immernoch nah genug zu seinen teens zur Angst berühren in seinen adenoids aber alt genug um eine gute Perspektive zu haben, Brendan's adolescent back-musings inform such other Wheatus songs wie "Truffles" und "Wannabe Gangsta." "Du kannst als Teenie nichts tun. Du hast keine Kraft; keine Mittel. Du bist Versuchskaninchen für jedermanns Dreck," sagt er.
Other tunes stem from more adult--but no less ludicrous--situations. "'Hump'em n' Dump'em' I wrote when the Senate was considering impeaching the President," Brendan says. "The cheapness aspect to it--this big fat dumb cheesy sex going on in the White House." A personal encounter with music business sleaze led to "Mister Brown." "I was trying to get paid for something I'd done and it didn't look like I was going to go," he says. But "Sunshine," the first song Brendan wrote for the record, encapsulates the Wheatus do-it-for-yourself ethos. "It was an explanation to myself about what I'd been doing wrong, working for other people," he says. The song mission accomplished, Brendan recruited his younger brother Peter to play drums--basically the younger Brown's destiny. "Every day since I was 11, I'd wait for my brother to come home with a new album," Peter recalls. "Brendan was the coolest person I knew." But it wasn't blood that hooked him on Wheatus. "I love these songs," he says. "The day I decided this band would occupy the majority of the rest of my life was a great one." To add some just-right flourishes to otherwise no-frills arrangements, Wheatus turned to Phil A. Jimenez, a multi-instrumentalist and engineer Brendan knew from around. "The first song I heard was 'Dirtbag' and before the end of the first verse I knew I was going to work with Brendan," Phil recalls. "The next week I was at rehearsal--I heard every song and I loved every song. The power of the pop elements plus the story-telling and the social commentary was just something I really wanted to be a part of." Phil not only added percussion, harmonica, even a bit of banjo, he also co-produced Wheatus with the band. Which was done by-and-large in the Brown family home. "We were all still working day jobs and recording at one in the morning in the basement of my mother's house," Brendan says. "We set up the control room on the dining table, then ran a hundred-foot snake downstairs to record." Adds Peter: "Die Nachbarn waren Tolerant. Grandma kochte für uns.
