PROFILE OF ANCO

Full Name:

Apiculture and Nature Conservation Organization.

Date and Place of Foundation:

January 22, 1992 at Bamenda as the North West Beefarmers' Association (NOWEBA).

Mission:

ANCO is dedicated to assisting rural communities and groups in integrated Nature Conservation.

Motto:

Pro-Poor Conservation.

Objectives:

  • To contribute to integrated biodiversity conservation in Cameroon
  • To support local communities fight poverty through income generating activities and sustainable land management systems.

Areas of intervention.

ANCO uses an integrated approach to intervene in the following areas:
  • Nature conservation
    • supports communities through the CF processes to the convention status.
    • helps communities to protect their watersheds.
    • assists in the protection of wildlife sanctuaries
  • Sustainable Farming systems
    • promotion of agroforestry
    • training in night paddock manuring systems, improved fallow, improved pasture and erosion control cultivation.
  • Income generating activities
    • beefarming training and equipment assistance
    • market gardening training
    • training in mushroom production and honey by-products.
    • training in nursery establishment.



Track record so far

  • Nature conservation: 03 community forests successfully conserved, 26 watersheds and 01 bat sanctuary protected.
  • Sustainable land management systems: Trained total of 2600 farmers in various forms of SLM.
  • Income generation:

    7.851 rural people trained in apiculture. Of these 1.564 were women who before were never involved in apiculture. With funding from various sources, those trained were assisted with 3.575 beehives, 2051 smokers, 2.680 beesuits and 1500 honey harvesting containers.

    These achievements were recognized in 2005 by the award of excellence to ANCO.

Funding sources so far:

Global Environment Facility, NC-IUCN (TRP), HELVETAS Cameroon, British and Canadian High Commissions, German and Dutch Embassies in Cameroon, International Tree Foundation and Village AiD in UK, Geuzenveld/Slotermeer Council in Holland, the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew UK, the German Development Organization (DED) etc.
