PROFILE OF COMINSUD
NAME Community Initiative for Sustainable Development.
STATUS Registered under Cameroon Law of Association as a Development Organisation.
YEAR OF CREATION 1996.
MAIN SECTOR OF ACTIVITY:
- Promotion of Sustainable Agriculture, Natural Resource Management and Environmental Education.
- Promotion of Good Governance (Human Rights, Democracy and Local Governance)
PROJECTS IMPLEMENTED:
- Soil Fertility Improvement in Bamenda Central Subdivision (2001-2006). Focus on compost production and Agroforetry practices.
- Developing Biodiversity Indicators as a tool for Regulating Development Activities in and around Wetlands and Protected Areas in the North West Province (2005).
- Democracy and the Empowerment of Women (2003-2008). Project concerned with grassroots political empowerment, operates in the NorthWest Province and is scaling up to other Provinces through different Institutions/Organisations.
MAIN INTEREST: Strengthen the Capacity of local communities and Service Organisations to undertake sustainable exploitation of Natural Resources and encourage conservation measures.
MAIN DIFFICLTIES:
- Insufficient technical capacity to carry out scientific analysis.
- A weak livelihood support base and governance system that makes survival difficult for the majority of the people thereby pushing them to irrational resource exploitation practices.
- Difficulties to secure funds from donors for conservation initiatives.
