SIRDEP's Profile

The Society for Initiatives in Rural Development and Environmental Protection (SIRDEP) is a non-governmental, non-profit making organisation operating in the North West Province of Cameroon with its Head Quarters in Bamenda.

OBJECTIVES

SIRDEP strives to enhance the standard of living of the rural/urban poor in a changing environment in view of alleviating poverty through continuous research and sustainable development practices in:
Environmental protection, Women and Development, Self-help promotion, Rural peoples organisation, Indigenous Technical Knowledge, Training, Education and extension, Planning, monitoring and evaluation, Livestock production, HIV/AIDS prevention/sensitisation and trainings, Rural Infrastructure, Human rights, Good Governance and Micro Financing.

TARGET

SIRDEP's clients are all the actors having an interest in rural development, notably NGOs, GOs, rural communities, women groups, family units, local councils and individuals. Our Motto: "WE HELP YOU HELP YOURSELF".

ACTIVITIES UNDER THE NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT COMPONENT.

  • WATER CATCHMENT PROTECTION

    In an effort to safeguard the further availability of water, SIRDEP is working closely with rural communities to protect their watershed areas. Protection is acquired through conservation farming, afforestation/reforestation and agroforestry.
    SIRDEP has protected over twenty- three (23) water catchments in the North West province with Mendankwe and Chomba Watersheds being the most important supplying Bamenda urban area.

  • COMMUNITY FOREST MANAGEMENT AND BOIDIVERSITY CONSERVATION

    SIRDEP is involved in the sustainable managment of community Forests.
    We are assisting the communities of Ndaka/Buku/Abbafum in Donga Mantung Division, Baba II and Njen communities in the managment of their natural forests.
    Eco- tourism and student research is promoted in all our endeavours.
    We also carry socio-economic studies and plant and animal surveys in most of our project areas.

    SIRDEP also runs a modern nursery for propagated high value tree species and agro-species (plantain production).
