Dog's
Best Friend
By
Spirit, the sweet aussie to comfort her Liz
I look down upon your saddened face
And I wish I could be with you,
to make everything back-trace
A tear rolls down your cheek,
As I try to tell you I'm here.
Another falls as you blink,
I hope this will end -- all this fear.
I'm safe up here, you see --
All this grass, water, flowers, and trees
I have many friends
You know - this isn't the end.
I'm here although you may not see me,
I try to to tell you that I can see
All the pain you're in --
It's hard to watch
I wish I could help you,
I wish it would stop
I'm happy where I am --
Many friends, dogs, and oh wow! Ham!
I sit by your side,
Try to tell you I'm here
I rub my nose on your arm, leg, and hair
Try to remember the good times,
Although they're behind
When I was a puppy,
As happy as can be
When I was hungry, I was fed,
When I was tired, you showed me my bed.
I was a cute little thing,
I gave you a great test,
To see what kind of master you were,
Obviously - the best!
When I was in too great of pain,
You said it was a shame.
"I can't believe I'm so selfish,"
"To keep you alive like this."
You are not selfish, you see --
You just really loved me.
It takes a true dog lover
To send their dog along --
That bundle of fur,
All by themselves,
Watching them close their eyes,
You almost despise --
Yourself for you thought you have given them pain,
Although it was nothing but needless shame.
But nothing works, you see --
I am far from you, but I am still me
Then again, I'm as close as I can get --
Just a different world away and yet --
We will see each other again someday,
Don't worry, my friend, it's not too far away!
I try you heal your wounds - I try to mend
Please don't be sad, it's not the end.
Live your life the fullest,
And when it's at the very end,
I'll greet you at the bridge,
Why, you're dog's best friend.
