The Current Age | After the seals of the Dark One's prison broke, Rahvin made his way to Caemlyn and assumed the name Gaebril - and using compulsion, he seduced Queen Morgase. She changed from a capable Queen to a simpering pet almost overnight. Rahvin kept a harem of Morgase and numerous other ladies around the palace. Rahvin replaced all of Morgase's loyal servants and arms men with those loyal to him, changing even their pledge, from the Queen of Andor to the Throne of Andor. Eventually Morgase came to realise the fool that she had been played for - with the help of her childhood nurse, Lini, and left the Caemlyn in secret. Unperturbed, Rahvin had himself proclaimed King in her absence. Concurrently, Rahvin had been plotting with Graendal, Sammael and Lanfear to trap Rand, using Sammael as bait while the other three linked. Rand, not falling for the trap, made his way to Caemlyn. On arrival, Rahvin attacked, killing Aviendha, Mat and Asmodean. Rand travelled to the throne room of the palace, Rahvin was surprised - and ran to Tel'aran'rhiod. Rahvin trapped Rand, but Nynaeve saved him, allowing Rand to balefire Rahvin from the pattern, with such strength that Mat, Aviendha and Asmodean were brought back to life. Even The Dark One stated that it was beyond him to bring Rahvin back from this. |
. | . | My Thoughts on Rahvin | While it can be said about a number of the Forsaken, I believe that Rahvin is really the most mysterious of them all. We know nothing of him before he turned to the Dark, and little from after until he arrived in Caemlyn. He was, in my opinion, one of the most courageous Forsaken in taking over one of the most major cities in the world - indeed, a city that Rand had attachment to more than any other.
Why he did this so (relatively) openly we don't know. I believe, however, that it must be related to whatever profession he was a part in the Age of Legends - of which we really cannot be sure. But perhaps some of his personality traits can assist in an answer to that question. He wants power - it was the reason he joined the Shadow. He did not feel that he could obtain this power through the Light. Perhaps he felt that through his abilities, it was not possible to benefit others in a way that would give him the power that he craved. Perhaps due to what he did, he felt that he was repressed from the ability to gain power or recognition. I would then prepose that he was some form of Bureaucrat, working behind the scenes to benefit those in power, but without the ability to gain any for himself. |
