For Her - Chapter 6

by: Deanna

(Luke has just seen Sonny and Jax laughing together in the hallway outside Alexis's room)

"What's happening, tell me."

"Trust me, you wouldn't believe me, if I did, sweetheart. You wouldn't believe me if I did."

"Try Me!"

"Hey, why don't you try me?" Luke said flirtatiously

"Excuse me." Alexis said, not getting it.

"Tell me what happened, tell me why you are lying there in that hospital bed with tubes in you. Tell me why I shouldn't just go and find Helena and make her regret what her 'boys' did to you." Luke crossed his arms over his chest and waited.

Alexis smiled. She realized he was serious. She tried to straighten up but was in to much pain and gave up. She didn't know how much to tell him, but she was still frustrated about not knowing what was going on outside. "You tell me first."

"I have no idea about what exactly happened to you. I was hoping you could help me to get to the bottom of it." Luke said, wondering why she thought he'd know anything.

"I'm not accusing you Luke. I wasn't talking about that. I want to know what was happening outside just now. You tell me and I'll tell you everything I know, deal."

"Deal." Luke smiled. "Well, I didn't see much but, well, it sort of looked like Sonny had just told Jax a joke."

"Come on, Luke. I'm serious. What was happening?"

"I knew you wouldn't believe me if I told you."

"Your serious."

"That's what it looked like, I wasn't about to ask any questions and ruin the mood."

"Well, of all the things that could have been happening outside my door. That's one of the best."

"Not that it will last long. I better get Sonny out of here before they remember they hate each other." Luke smiled. "So you better tell me what you know."

Alexis told him everything he already knew from Sonny. The only new tidbits of information he got were how Jax had come upon the files, and that she didn't even know much about what was in them. She mentioned how she had sort of put off reading them because she had been debating going after Cassadine things anymore. She had a new family now. 'Jax's family was the best' she'd said 'she'd never felt so wanted or loved before.' She wore herself out talking and fell asleep mid-sentence. She had been planning on telling him everything. She hadn't got to the most important part. The part where she would have told him that she had copies of the files. That as soon as she got out of there she was going to find out what they thought she knew so she could be one step ahead of them.

Luke didn't want to push. She looked so weak and tired. He didn't think she had much more to say. He knew two things. She was in danger and she didn't know why. Luke left the room and walked to Jax, noticing Sonny had stepped back out of the way again so as to not 'be in Jax's way.' Luke told Jax that Alexis was sleeping.

"Did she tell you much?" Jax asked Luke wondering how much Alexis really trusted Luke and why.

"She told me everything. I'm on it." Luke walked across to Sonny before Jax could ask what that meant.

Luke walked to Sonny. "Things looked downright friendly a minute or so out here in the hallway. What happened?"

"Oh nothing." Sonny said fuming at the thought of being friends with Jax, even though the Alexis connection was making it happen despite himself. "I just helped Jax get Cassadine to leave before Jax could kill him."

"Stefan was here." Luke said upset that he missed out on helping to kick him out.

"Yeah he came in, acting like he owned the place, the jerk."

"He does own the place."

"Oh, yeah, well, you know what I mean. Do you think he had anything to do with this?" Sonny asked Luke, since Luke was the Cassadine expert.

"Well, I wouldn't put it past him, but Alexis seems to think it was Helena. Helena and Vlad don't do too much together. Jax, blaming him, probably has more to do with the possibility that if Stefan did know about this, Jax isn't so sure he would have even given her a head's up. They aren't on the best of terms."

"I see. Well, what's our plan." Sonny asked knowing he'd gotten Luke hooked to the idea of helping her out. They watched as a nurse entered Alexis' room.

"First item on the agenda. OPERATION FILE FIND. They think she knows something that she doesn't even know. We have to find the files so that she can find away to combat them with the information. You in?"

"Sounds good to me." They shook hands. This was it. They were partners again.

Jax went to Alexis bedside and sat there staring at his wife. There she was, bandage on her face, pale as a ghost, hooked up to monitors' and all he could thing was 'God, she's beautiful.' He let himself stare at her for a while, watching her breathing, rejoicing that she was alive, and then remembered, he still hadn't called Ned.

He was getting up to call Ned when the nurse entered. He almost walked out leaving her alone with her when he thought better of it and asked the nurse what she was hanging. The nurse looked at him apologetically continuing her work. "I'm sorry, what did you ask sir."

"I said, what is that you are giving her? Dr. Jones didn't mention putting her on any medication."

"This is just routine sir." The woman said.

Something about this didn't feel right. "What kind of medicine is it then?" When she didn't answer and started to look nervous. He said, "I'm just going to call Bobbie and ask her why this medicine is to be given." She panicked at that moment and fled the room at a run still holding the medicine.

She bumped into Luke on the way out dropping the bag on the floor. She took off, and was gone before Jax got out the door and said. "Stop that woman."

Sonny took in the situation at a glance and took off after the woman only to return shortly saying 'she'd just disappeared.' "What happened?"

Jax told him the story he'd told Luke. The police were on there way and Bobbie was back at the room making sure that Alexis was okay. The three men stood together for the first time not respecting each other's space or staying out of each other's way.

Bobbie came out. "She's just fine, slept thru everything. The IV bag said it was just a Dextrose mixture. But I doubt that. The police lab will tell us for sure." She turned to Jax. "It's good you stopped her before she had a chance to hook up the IV bag. Anything in that bag could have gone directly in her bloodstream."

"What made you think something was out of the ordinary Jax?" Sonny asked a little impressed despite himself. "I mean it was an IV, she's in a hospital, that was a good catch."

Jax was surprised at the compliment. "Being a Cassadine spouse keeps you on your toes. You learn to keep both eyes open at all times. I just had a bad feeling."

Bobbie put her arm on Jax's back. "You look tired. You need to get some rest."

"I can't leave her now Bobbie. Someone just tried to kill her. The cops are on there way. They have to get our statements." He then asked Bobbie. "How do I arrange that she have a private nursing staff. One that never really changes. One that we can trust."

"I'll take care of it." Bobbie told Jax. "We know you are good for it." She laughed knowing just how expensive that was going to be.

Sonny wondered just how much Jax had left after bailing out Jerry and helping him get out of town. 'Why do I care?' Sonny caught himself.

The police had come and gone. It was early morning already, about 2 am. Sonny and Luke had stayed to give statements and descriptions of the woman. When the cops hadn't left someone to guard her, Sonny debated with himself about asking Jax if he could put some of his guards on her door. He knew she needed the guards and also had a feeling Jax would never leave her if she wasn't guarded.

"Jax, Luke and I are on our way out."

"Thanks for all your help." Jax said before he could stop himself.

"I'd like to do more. I don't know how well this suggestion will go over but I'm going to make it anyway."

"Go ahead." Jax thought knowing that this truce of there's wasn't gonna last forever.

"I'd like to leave some of my guards here, and set up a schedule, to have two guards on her door at all times until she's out of here or until she's safer." There he'd said it, he'd made his offer. 'Take or leave it.' Sonny thought to himself. 'I did my part.'

Sonny and Luke were both shocked at Jax's answer. Jax didn't for one minute like the thought of Sonny's men guarding Alexis, but it made sense. "She needs guards. I don't like it but its true. Thank you. I'll use your men until I can find some others."

"I wouldn't count on that Jax. There are 3 guard agency's in this town. My guys, Moreno's and the hospital guards. The hospital guards work for her brother. Moreno's guards would love the chance to get at my lawyer. My guys might be your only choice."

Jax understood even if he didn't want to. He didn't know if he could trust a private bodyguard, and he knew Sonny's men would look after his lawyer very well. "It might work to her advantage. Her family may get the impression that she thinks it was mob related. I doubt it. But they might. But wait, the police may think this is mob related, if they see your men at her door. Will that be a problem for you?"

"I can explain it away, besides its none of there business, if I want my lawyer protected. I used to have men on Justus when he was my lawyer. I'll set it up. Luke and I will leave when they get here."

Jax was grateful. He didn't like it one bit but he had to put Alexis' safety first. He then remembered what he was planning to do before all this happened. I need to call Ned, he thought to himself. He rose to go use the phone but before he could, John and Lady Jane arrived. John and Jane gathered him in a hug. He felt so comforted by there presence. Bobbie had done right to call them. "Tell us everything, Son." John said anxiously.

Sonny had gone off to make the arrangements and Luke was watching the scene from the corner of the hall. 'I guess you do have a new family now Natasha.' He promised himself then that he was going to make sure she was somehow safe from the Cassadine's so she could enjoy her new family in peace.
