MadridLucky and Elizabeth had continued running for what seemed like hours until they came across a gas station. There was a pay phone right outside.
"I'm going to call Nicolas and Angela and tell them to come and get us," she said breathlessly before correcting herself, "Me. I don't think they should hear about you over the phone." She smiled broadly. "Everyone is gonna be so happy!" she said excitedly as she hugged him, and went to the pay phone towing him behind her.
Lucky was smiling with her, but he was still so worried. It had been to easy. He couldn't help but wonder if Faison had meant for them to still be in the house when it blew up. He kept glancing around nervously.
Angela picked up the phone after the second ring, "Hello?"
"Angela, Hi it's Elizabeth. Is Nicolas there with you?" Elizabeth asked her. Lucky looked at her at the mention of his brothers name.
"Yeah, of course. Why? Where are you?"
"Didn't you get the message I left for you at the front desk?"
"You're still at Schlages' place?" she asked glancing at her watch.
"Not exactly. Do you remember how to get to his house?"
"Sure." Angela said thinking, "There was only that one long road after that little antique shop we went into."
Elizabeth glanced around her and saw the shop Angela was referring to, "Well, I'm at a gas station across the street from it and I really need you and Nicolas to come and get me." She looked at Lucky and noticed how nervous he was, "Immediately. Can you come?"
"Of course. Are you okay?" Angela asked her with concern.
Lucky was watching her as she said, "I'm perfect. I've never felt better in my whole life." She hung up the phone and kissed him full on the lips. "They'll be here shortly." she said as she pulled back.
Lucky pulled her around to the side of the building not facing the road. "We'll stay here out of sight until they get here." he said before pulling her into a tight hug.
"Lucky?" she asked.
"Yeah," he asked pulling away from her.
"How much danger are we in? I mean, I think that Donique set it up for me to find you. Why would he come after us? Aren't the people who kidnaped you going to be angry with him? Why would he set you free and then hurt us?" She didn't understand at all.
"Donick Schlages' real name is Cesar Faison. He's the one who had me all along." he said slowly.
"What? I don't understand. Why would he decide to all of a sudden let you go?" she asked him.
He pulled her back into his arms, "I don't know."
******************************* "Come on Nicolas we got to go get Elizabeth. She's stranded at a gas station." she said after she hung up the phone.
"What? Where?" he asked her, "Is she okay? Is everything all right?" Ever since his brothers death, Nicolas considered Elizabeth a major priority to him. He took care of her for Lucky.
"She's fine I think, but she sounded urgent. Come on."
******************************* Elizabeth recognized the rental car as it pulled into the lot of the gas station. She turned to Lucky, "Are you ready?" All he could do was nod.
As she walked towards the car she looked only at Nicolas sitting in the drivers seat. She walked to his side and pulled open the door, "Get out. I have someone who wants to see you."
Nicolas didn't understand what was going on and he couldn't read the expression on Elizabeths' face. "Who is it?" he asked her. He looked at Angela who only shrugged.
"Just come with me." she told him.
Lucky was still standing to the side of the building. He could hear footsteps coming towards him and the knot that had formed in his stomach got tighter.
Elizabeth led Nicolas to the corner of the building and said, "Take a deep breath." Nicolas looked at her like she was crazy. "Just do it." she commanded.
After he let the breath out Elizabeth took his hand and rounded the corner with him. He came face to face with his brother.
Lucky looked at a stunned Nicolas with tears in his eyes, "Remember me?"
"Oh my God!" he softly said, "Lucky?" Nicolas was in shock. "Lucky? Is it really you?" he asked him as his own tears fell from his eyes.
"Yeah, Nikki. It's really me. Alive and well." he joked through his tears.
Nicolas pulled him into a hug. "Oh my God!" He was crying now. "I can't...I thought...Where?... He was stuttering out his thoughts, "Oh my God!"
"I know you have a lot of questions and I'll be happy to answer all of them." Lucky said as he pulled away from his brother, "But right now, my only concern is getting out of here!"
Elizabeth had been watching them with tears in her eyes, "Come on." she said. "It's time for Lucky to meet his sister-in-law." She grabbed Luckys' right hand and Nicolas' left hand and walked to the car.
Angelas' curiosity had gotten the better of her. She had gotten out of the car and was about to walk towards where Nicolas and Elizabeth had disappeared when she saw them walking back. ‘Who is that guy?' she asked herself. As they got closer to the car he began to look familiar to her. ‘It can't be! No way! Oh my God!'
"Angela," Nicolas called to his wife through his tears, "I would like you to meet my," he turned to look at his brother, "Oh man," he walked over to Lucky and put his arm around his shoulder, noticing how much taller he was. He took a deep breath and began again. "I would like you to meet my brother, Lucky Spencer. Lucky, this is my wife Angela."
Angela was stunned. "Holy Shit! Holy Shit!" they were all laughing and crying. "How is this possible?" She went over and pulled Lucky into a hug.
"Like I told my brother," he said after she stepped back, "I'll explain as much as I can in the car. We really have to get out of here!"
"Let's go then." Elizabeth said as she grabbed Luckys' hand and got in the back of the car. When Lucky got in behind her she sat on his lap with her legs to the side resting on the seat. When he looked at her she smiled at him, "I just want to be close to you." she said. He smiled back and softly kissed her.
When they were on the road again Lucky began telling his story, tears were coming from all of their eyes. When he was first taken, the threats, the cameras on all of them. He looked in the rearview mirror at his brother, "Helena knows I'm alive. Actually, I think it was her idea."
Nicolas pulled over to the side of the road and stopped the car, "That BITCH!" he screamed as he pounded on the steering wheel. Angela took his hands as he turned around in his seat and looked at his brother, "Lucky, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."
"Why?," Lucky asked him softly, "It isn't your fault. You didn't know."
"She was my grandmother!" he said, his voice thick with emotion.
Lucky looked at him curiously, "Was?"
"Yeah, she died last summer of a heart attack. I never knew how to feel about it when my father called and told me. Now, all I feel for her is hatred." His voice was calm, but full of venom.
Nicolas turned back around in the car and started driving. No one knew what to say after that. Angela laid her head back on her seat and thought about what to say to Nicolas when they were alone.
As he was driving, Nicolas wondered how he could have been even remotely related to such a sad excuse for a human being.
Lucky and Elizabeth were sitting in the back seat, smiling through their tears, staring at eachother. She was still sitting in his lap and their heads were laid back on the seat facing eachother.
Lucky was tenderly running his thumb across her lips, "I'm sorry that I couldn't come home. I couldn't let them hurt you." he choked out as softly as he could.
Elizabeth laid her fingertips on his trembling lips, "Shhh! You're with me now. That's what matters."
Lucky kissed her softly, and laid his forehead against hers.
******************************* When they got back to the hotel they went straight to Elizabeths' room.
"We have to go back to Port Charles." Lucky said, "I have to see my," he placed his hands on his stomach. The knot he had before he saw Nicolas was back.
Elizabeth went over to him and led him to a chair.
He took her hands in his, "I need you to call my parents and tell them to be careful. Tell them to be on their guard until you get home."
She sat on the floor in front of him, "How do I do that without telling them about you?"
He put his head down and thought for a moment.
"We could say something about Stephan." Nicolas said after a moment.
Lucky looked at him. "Like what?"
Nicolas sat on the bed across from him. "We could say that I called him while I was here and he started saying things about mom that have got me a little freaked."
Lucky was completely confused.
"How is that gonna work?" Angela asked.
Elizabeth looked back to Lucky. "After your mom and dad got back together…"
"Mom and dad are back together?" he asked softly. Faison hadn't told him that, and any time he let him see his parents they were never at the same place together.
Elizabeth smiled. "Yeah," she said softly. "I'll tell you about it later okay?"
Lucky was smiling as he nodded.
Elizabeth continued. "Afterwards, Stephan would call Nicolas and do exactly what we're going to pretend he did, say weird threatening things about Laura. It's perfect because Nicolas always told Luke and you know your father," they both laughed. "He never took anything a Cassidine said lightly."
"Okay it's settled. Elizabeth go call Luke." Nicolas said a little uncomfortably.
Elizabeth was still sitting on the floor in front of Lucky with their hands together. "Do you want to listen in on the call?" she asked him softly.
Lucky looked at her for a moment. "No. I can't," he whispered biting his bottom lip.
She placed her hands on his face. "It's okay." she said softly giving him a kiss on his forehead and standing up. She turned to Angela and Nicolas, "I'll call from your room."
******************************* Port Charles
Luke was sitting on the couch going over the books for the club when the phone starting ringing. "Can't a guy get frustrated in peace anymore?" he reached over and picked up the phone, "Yeah."
"Luke Hi. It's Elizabeth."
"Hi sweetheart. Are you guys back already?" he asked as he threw down his pen and rubbed his eyes.
"No not yet, but we are coming back early." she said nervously.
"Why? Is everything alright?" he asked a little concerned.
"Well actually that's why I called." she hated lying. "Look, Nicolas was talking to his father and he's a little worried. Stephan was talking about the things he use to. You know after Laura left him on the altar?"
"What? He hasn't said anything threatening about Laura for years!" Luke was stunned.
"Yeah well that is precisely why Nicolas is so worried. He just thinks you should be on your guard for the next little while." she said.
"You mean look both ways before I cross the street type of thing?"
"Something like that. Just promise me that you'll be careful and watch over your family."
"Always sweetheart. Always."
"Good. I'll call you as soon as we get back. I promise."
"See ya soon." he hung up the phone. "What the hell is that idiot up to?"
"What idiot?" Laura asked. She had heard him talking to himself as she entered the livingroom.
"Hey baby. Sit down." When she was seated Luke recited the phone call from Elizabeth back to her.
******************************* Madrid
Elizabeth went back into her own room. "All set." she said sitting down next to Lucky, who had moved to the edge of the bed.
"I moved all of our flights to the next available one out at midnight and I bought Lucky a ticket." Nicolas said. After a few seconds of silence he asked "Did you guys want to get something to eat?"
Lucky turned to Elizabeth, who was watching him, "Come out on the balcony with me?" he asked as he took her hand.
"Sure, but aren't you hungry?" she asked him.
"No," he shook his head, " I'm way to nervous to eat."
She smiled at him, "Me too." She turned to Nicolas as they got up from the bed, "We'll get something later."
After he had closed the door behind him he took Elizabeth into his arms. "We have to be very, very careful for the next few months." he said as he pulled away from her, "I just got you back, I'm not going to let anything happen to either one of us. Ever."
"Lucky, I don't know why, but I don't think Cesar Faison is ever going to hurt us again."
"Elizabeth..."
She put her hand up to stop him from going any further. "Do you realize," she took a labored breath "that that is the first time you've said my name all afternoon?" He shook his head. She was softly crying. "For years the only way I could hear you say it was to listen to that song you wrote for me. After you," she cradled his face with her hands, "You have stubble. Did you know that?" They both laughed. "After you were gone I couldn't listen to it, it hurt so much. But after a while I started listening to it all the time. I needed so desperately to hear your incredible voice." she stopped for a moment, "Lucky? Would you sing..." she didn't get to finish.
"As you kneel beside your bed tonight, keep a little prayer for me in sight," he took her right hand in his, their eyes never breaking contact, and started dancing with her as they both began to cry. "Know that I will be there when you fall, know that I will catch you if you should fall, Elizabeth, I wanna watch you breathe, I wanna feel Gods' peace, all I want is this," he stopped dancing and kissed her, "Elizabeth." he choked her name out.
His voice had cracked with the emotions he was feeling the entire time he had been singing. To anyone else it may have even sounded funny, but to her it was the most beautiful thing she had ever heard. She reached up to her neck and pulled the long chain out from beneath her shirt. Lucky was watching her the whole time, and when he saw what lay dangling on the chain he started sobbing even harder. He pulled the chain over her head and tried to remove the ring he had given her from it, but he couldn't. His hands were shaking. Elizabeth placed her own shaky hands over his and helped him with the clasp. When they had gotten the ring off the necklace he placed it on her ring finger and then brought her hand up to his lips and kissed it.
"I love you so much." he managed to say before pulling her into a hug, lifting her up and spinning her around.
When he put her down she said, "Come back inside. I want to show you something."
