Liz circled the cage that she was in. It was made out of some sort of metal, some special alloy that she couldn't even dent. There was a bed, a sink and toilet. Nothing else. The room was cold, unfeeling. She knew she was being watched, the camera in the corner told her that much. But out of curiousity, she did not break it. She wanted to know who her capters were. She knew they were that band of government agents that she had heard about. What happened last night proved that. Or was it last night? She did not know what time it was, let alone the day. She had woken up about an hour earlier, her brain still fuzzy from the effects of some drug that they had given her. The last thing that she remembered was standing in the park, with Lucky looking at her in horror.
What did Lucky have anything to do with this? How did he know that she was there? Was he part of this governement squad? It certainly looks that way. If it was true, it would explain almost everything about him. How he knew how to fight so good, how he knew about vampires . . . She punched the wall in frustration. How could she have been so stupid? All this time he was trying to trap her and she just fell for it, hook, line and sinker. She even went as far as to fall in love with him! How dumb was that? Well, it served her right, she should have known better than fall in love with a human. At this very moment she finally understood why the rule was in place. Humans were trouble, they were good only as food. She knew that now. But now wasn't time to berate herself, she had bigger problems to deal with. Like getting out of here alive.
Who was that man that Lucky had called Frisco? He seemed to be the leader. So many unanswered questions, so much time to think. She didn't know what they wanted with her, maybe do some sort of testing, torture. In any case, she didn't want to find out.
Sitting in the middle of the room, Liz concentrated on her mind, expanding it outward, trying to find out what was going on. Ever since she was little she knew that she and her sister was different from the other vampires. The other younger ones could not read minds or sense emotions, but both she and Sarah had that ability. Sarah's was more profound, since she was older and Liz learned from an early age to block the annoying feeling of having her thoughts dissected. But as she grew, so did her power of sensing emotion and getting ideas from other people's heads. However she was not a mind reader, she could only sense things.
Taking in a deep breath, she reached out, trying to find something, anything to help her. She felt her mind brush against something, and in shock she severed the connection instantly. It was another vampire, she could feel it, but her mind was not scared, as she would have expected, but peaceful.
~~~ Issabelle slowly came out of her trance, disappointed. For the first time, her mind had connected with a new mind, different from the humans on the base. It was familiar, it felt like hers. Breathing slowly, she tried again, but with no avail. Whoever that was, she was blocking her advances. She got up and began to pace, did they capture another one of her kind? She had known, of course, that that was what Frisco did, but never had she enocountered a mind that could link with hers. She wanted to know about this person. She went to the phone and asked for Frisco.
In several minutes, he appeared. His appearance was horrible, his face was pale and drawn. His normally bright eyes were tired. She wished she could make him feel better. Going over to him, she reached out and gave him a hug. "How are you?"
"I could be better." He answered wryly. "How come you wanted to see me? I don't want to be rude, but I'm kinda busy right now."
A little taken aback by his tone, she replied carefully, "You brought someone back a couple of nights ago."
"Yes." He didn't ask how she knew, he supposed she heard through the grapevine.
"Is she okay?"
"Yes."
"Can I meet her?" She asked hopefully.
He blinked in surprise, "I . . . I think it would be better if we were to wait for that."
"But I can meet her?"
"Perhaps later." His disposition was foul. He didn't know Lucky's role in this little escapade, but he was intent on finding out. He had refused to come back with them to the base. In fact, as soon as Frisco ordered his men to bring the girl back here, Lucky had fled. He hadn't heard from him in two days. And it was getting him worried and annoyed. He was planning another trip back to Port Charles to find out what was happening with him. "I'm leaving for a couple of days. I have to tie up some loose ends." "Alright." She looked at him curiously, he wasn't acting like himself. "Are you okay? You seem . . . different."
"I'm fine." He said curtly. "I'll see you when I get back." With that, he exited the room, leaving Issabelle staring after him with astonishment.
~~~ Lucky knocked frantically on Nikolas' door, hoping against hope that he would be home. He had debated about coming to him for days now. He didn't know how he could help him, but Lucky was running out of options and time. The door opened and Lucky heaved a sigh of relief. "Thank God. Nikolas, I have something very important to tell you." He said, brushing past him and entering his house. "It's about Elizabeth . . ." He stopped when he saw Nikolas was not alone. Lucky looked at Nikolas with questioning eyes. "What is she doing here?"
"Lucky, I think it's time that I told you something too." Nikolas lead him to the table and sat him down. "You'll need to sit for this."
"But . . ." Lucky protested, eyeing Helena with suspision.
Helena stood and sat across from him. "Please, Lucky, you must listen to us. We are running out of time. Elizabeth is in danger, we have to get to her immediatly."
"Time for what? And how did you know that Elizabeth was in danger?"
Nikolas sat and pleaded with him, "Please, just let Helena speak. It is true, we are running out of time."
Lucky sighed and sat back, "Okay, I'm all ears."
Nikolas and Helena exchanged a look, and Nikolas nodded. "First of all, I know what you do for a living, Lucky. You work for a government unit called SAF, The Special Agent Force. You hunt vampires." A look of surprise crossed Lucky's face, "I know this because I have been following you for a really long time. I know everything about you, it's my job and Helena's."
"Your job?"
"You see, I'm not Nikolas. The real Nikolas died a long time ago. I did not kill him, he died of natural causes. When he passed away, I assumed his place. I am a chameleon, of sorts. Part vampire, part something else. My mission is to help her and protect you. Helena is a vampire and she is an elder, as am I, part of the highest and most powerful of them all. Our job is to protect the three chosen ones. And you are one of them, Lucky. And Liz is the other one. We have not been able to locate the third."
Lucky let a breath and looked at them, "You're crazy."
"Maybe so," Helena agreed, "But it still does not change the fact that we are who we are and you are who you are. Lucky, think about it, why do you think that I tried to kill your family so many times and not succeeded? I was born to protect you and your loved ones. It was the only way that I could follow you and your family without it looking suspisious to other council members. They thought it was a sick game that I play, to torture you. When my husband and son died, I let Luke believe that he had killed them. Stavros fell in love with your mother and in turn, I had to kill him. Just as I had to kill my husband for loving that opera singer. I did not do it willingly, but it had to be done." Helena let a small chuckle, "I suppose it was a small price to pay for me to be able to protect you." There was a trace of saddness in her voice, almost making Lucky feel sorry for her.
"We are all born for a purpose, Lucky. My purpose was to protect you, one of the chosen ones. I have been around for so long, for centuries, really, and I knew that my mission was to fulfill this prophecy." Helena reached into her pocket and handed him a yellowed piece of paper. The words were blurry, some were faded but he was able to decipher it.
--- In turn of the new century, the one with the silver eyes shall forever change the course of life for us. For it shall be the first of us, reborn in another body. It is she that will unite a human and a vampire in everlasting love, joining us together for eternity. She will lead us into a new century, a life where we shall not fear humans and they shall not fear us, but embrance our difference. But it would not be instantaneous, for everything in life will not come easy. There will be ones who oppose this new idea, and try to stop it. But there will those who believe in this concept and strive to achieve it. ---Lucky read it and laughed, "You expect me to believe this?"
"I was born with the knowledge that you were the one, who your ancesters were, so I could protect them so you could be born. Just as I knew of Elizabeth's ancesters and perserved them so she could be born. And I thought that I have done my duty, you were finally born and ready to meet with your counter part. My job should've have ended there, and in time, fate would lead you to the silver eyed one, but I am still here, ready to protect you from any harm. Therefore, there are forces out there that don't want this change, this evolution."
Nikolas cleared his throat, "I know this is hard to believe, Lucky, but it is true. Just as Helena and I were born to protect you, you were born to love Elizabeth, as Elizabeth was born to love you."
"The scripture mentions a silver eyed one. Who is she? What happens when we all get together?"
"We have never been able to locate the silver eyed one. No one was born with the knowledge of who she is. And what happens when all three of you get together? No one knows, only that it would be the beginning of a great future . . ."
Lucky sat in silence, letting all this information sink in. He looked up and stared at Nikolas, "You're not Nikolas?"
He offered a small smile, "No, I am not. He died when he was five, of a fever."
"But you said you were an elder? How can you assume a child's form?"
"Like I said, I am a chameleon, if you will. And besides, you only know what your prisioners tell you. They do not know us, or about me. They piece together information, make up parts, but that does not mean that it's true. But what is true, is that I am a couple of centeries old, and I can change my features if I so wish." He stopped and concentrated. Lucky watched, amazed as his face slowly transformed into his. Lucky stared in shock, it was like looking into a mirror. Nikolas smiled, but spoke in his own voice, "You see, things aren't always what they seem." He concentrated again and his face reverted back to its original form. "But it seems though that only I possess the ability to transform. I have never met anyone else who could do that."
"Then what does Helena do?" Lucky asked, diverting his attention to her.
"Nothing quite as amazing as that, I'm afraid. I can read minds, sense things. I suppose you could call me a telepath. Sometimes I can even see the future."
"Wow. That's a lot of info for a human." Lucky rubbed his forehead, trying to will his headache away. "What about Elizabeth then? Where is her protecter? If you guys are mine, where were they? How come they couldn't help her? She's been captured by SAF. I don't know how to help her. . ."
"We do not know who protects Elizabeth, we just know that there is someone who does." Nikolas gave him a sympathec smile, "Don't worry, we lived far too long to let anything stand in the way of this evolution. We'll get her back."
"How?"
Helena smiled, her eyes glittering, "We bust her out, of course."
~~~ The man smiled victoriously. He had managed to get rid of the girl's protecter, without too much of a struggle. He gently touched the cut on his face, it would not heal, for it was the work of a vamipre. He put some sort of spell on it and the cut refused to mend. No matter, it was a reminder of his cause, of his mission. Things would not change for the better, they would only get worse. If everyone knew about vampires then there would be a mass panic, a hunt. He had lived long enough to know how frightened people reacted. He witnessed the witch trails, and countless other masacres. Humans reacted badly to the unknown. SAF was proof enough of that. It did not matter which of the three he destroyed, because without all three of them, the evolution would not happen. But to play it safe, he was determined to kill all three, just in case. "I will succeed, they will die." He said aloud. Pleased with the way it sounded, he repeated it. "I will succeed, they will die." He chuckled, and went to search for Lucky.
~~~ Smiling happily, she grabbed her mother's hand and pulled her in front of a clothing store. "Don't you think that would good on me?" She asked, pointing to the dress in the window.
"I think it would nice on you, Lulu."
"You think so?"
Laura flashed her daughter a huge smile, "I'm your mother, I just know these things."
"I just want to everything to be perfect when Darren comes over to dinner tomorrow."
"I'm sure everything will be."
"How can you be so sure?" Lulu asked.
"Your father and I have already met Darren and we think he's a fine young man. I don't think our opinion is going to change overnight. Stop worrying, everything is going to be just fine." Laura said, hoping to reassure her daughter.
"You're right, mom. Everything is going to be okay." She reached over and gave her a tentitive hug. "Thank you."
Laura wrapped her arms around her and held her tight, relishing the fact that her daughter had hugged her, of her own free will. Her heart was bursting with joy, things were beginning to look up. "You're very welcome, now how about you go and try on that dress?"
~~~ The silence was almost deafening. The room was sound proof, she heard nothing but her own unsteady breathing for the past several hours. Liz closed her eyes and fought back an urge to cry. The room seemed to be getting smaller, the camera mocking her. She was paler than usual, she hadn't eaten in a couple of days. Without blood, she could survive for about four days. Any more than that, then she would die a slow and painful death. No one had come to get her, or bring her any food since she had woken up. Looking into the camera lens, she shouted, "Show yourselves, you cowards!! You can't keep me locked up here forever!!" She wanted to pick up the bed and heave it against the wall, but thought better of it. Letting them think she was a volitile vampire would do her no good. Why did she allow herself to get close to Lucky? She should have known better, she should've known . . . Letting a squeak of protest, she covered her ears, trying to block out the voices that suddenly invaded her mind.
*** "I want to meet her . . ." "Perhaps later . . ."
"It's our job to protect the three chosen ones . . ."
"How can I help her? . . ."
"We bust her out, of course . . ."
"Everything is going to be okay . . . ***
Her eyes flew open, a bewildered expression on her face. What was that? She distinctly heard several voices in her head, each saying different things. She tried to remember what she heard, but the voices and their words faded as quickly as they came. She covered her face with her hands and let the tears come. What was wrong with her? What kind of drug did they give her? Why would she suddenly start hearing things? Some of the voices sounded familiar, like she knew them. She could've sworn that one of them belonged to Lucky . . .
~~~ Sitting in the Cassidine private jet was a new experience for Lucky. He had never been on a private plane before. The cabin had a bedroom, a fancy washroom, and an entertainment centre. He relaxed against the plush leather seats, trying unsuccessfully not to worry about Elizabeth. He couldn't help picturing what they were doing to her. Was she okay? Did they feed her? Were they torturing her? He sucked in his breath, he hoped not. He couldn't bear seeing her hurt . . . he knew that they did some awful things to them in there . . . Once his trian of thought went in that direction, he couldn't help picturing her, tied up and being tortured. His insides were churning at the thought . . .
"Lucky?" Helena's voice jolted him back into reality. She was gazing at him curiously, a look of concern evident on her face. She was picking up really bad thoughts from his mind and decided to stop him before he freaked himself out. She didn't mean to pry, it was just that his emotions were so obvious that even Nikolas knew what was going on.
"Yeah?" He rubbed his eyes, trying to rid the image of them doing things to her.
"We're almost there."
"Do we have a plan?" He asked.
"I thought that you could go in and distract the gaurd or whoever, so we could get her out." Nikolas said.
"That's your plan?!" Lucky asked incredulously. "We're about to break out a prisioner in a tight government lock up and all you have is a sketchy plan?"
"Do you have a better suggestion?" Nikolas replied, not affected by Lucky's tone.
After a moment, Lucky sighed and slumped back into his chair. "No, I guess not."
"Don't you worry, Lucky, we have come too far to give up now. We will get her out. This I promise you." Helena said, hoping to reassure him.
"Okay. I guess we should go over the floor plan and possible escape routes." Lucky reached for Nikolas' laptop and hooked it up to his phone. After several minutes, the general layout of the compound appeared on the screen. "This area is the offices, this one is mine. You have to get in to get my security card to open the doors. It should be in the first drawer. You can't miss it. My password is 'foster'." Nikolas snickered, ignoring him, Lucky continued. "Using the card will only get you so far. You can reach up to subfloor 5 with it. The prisioners are usually kept on subfloor 6. After you get off the lift, you have to take a right, like this." Using his finger, Lucky traced the route to the emergency stairwell that would lead to the next floor. "If I remember correctly, there is an airvent somewhere in in the stairwell, you will have to crawl through it to get to the subfloor 6. There is no forcefield, or any type of barrier, due to the incredibly small space. Nikolas, you will have to turn into something small to get through. Helena will not be able to follow you." Lucky shook his head in amusement, chuckling to himself.
"What's so funny?" Helena asked.
"I was the one that designed the holding area. Ironic that I would break into my own design."
"Anyways, after I get onto subfloor 6, where do I find Elizabeth?"
Lucky studied the screen, "I don't know. The holding cells cover the entire floor. I have no idea where they would hold her. Maybe on this side," He pointed to the left, "Mostly because Frisco would put the high risk hostiles on that side. It's more heavily protected, but I can give you access codes to open the doors. They might have changed it though, with Frisco being suspisious of me and such."
"Why would he feel that?" Nikolas asked.
"Well, I wasn't very helpful when he took Elizabeth."
"You were there?!"
Lucky lowered his eyes, "I was there. But I got there too late. He had already shot her with a tranqulizer. There would have been no way to escape with a limp vampire and a dozen army men chasing after me." He left out the part when Elizabeth realized that he was part of them. The pain in her eyes cut a hole into his heart. He had no idea that she had loved him so much that she would feel that betrayed.
"So you just ran." Helena finished, using every bit of will power not to read his thoughts. It wouldn't be right.
"Yes. I thought if I could get away, I could get her out somehow . . ." His voice cracked, not wanting to let on how much he was hurting, he curtly dropped the subject. "Did you memorize the floor plan?"
"Yes. I got it all up here." Nikolas said, tapping his head with a smile.
"Good, because once you're in, I can't help you directly. You will be on your own."
"What will I be doing once Nikolas gets into subfloor 6?" Helena asked, amazed that Lucky could come up with a plan so quickly.
"You said you could read minds, right?"
She nodded, "But not always clearly. Some humans can block it, even if it is unintentionally."
"Well, we're just going to hope for the best because you need to get the access codes from them. Can you talk to Nikolas in his head? Communicate it somehow once you found out?"
"Yes, but I need a quiet place to concentrate. It isn't as easy as it looks you know, even with centuries of practice."
"I'll find a place." He replied confidently. "Here's the plan." He quickly ran over the details again, hoping that he didn't miss anything. "Everyone got it?" They nodded and he relaxed a bit. He got up and wandered into the bedroom. Sitting in the chair next to the window, he gazed outside. The plane was decending, he could see the desert below. They would have to rent a vehicle to get to the compound. Getting inside would be the difficult part. There were cameras everywhere. But he wasn't worried, "I'm going to find you, Elizabeth. And once I do, I'm never going to let you go."
