An Impossible Love - Chapter 9

by: Elisa

The window from the third floor of the Port Charles Hotel held an excellent view of downtown PC. Frisco had re-checked himself in and had gotten the same room as before. He couldn't leave town now that his daughter had seen him. There were issues to be settled that should have been discussed years ago. It was early morning, the sun just rising. He couldn't sleep, not with the knowledge that his older daughter hated him and that his younger daughter didn't even know who he was. It was such a mistake to come here, to distrupt their lives. He was fully convinced that Maxie had put him behind her, that she probably considered Mac as her father and no other. Not that he blamed her, he only blamed himself.

He had to go see her, make things right. At the very least he should see Felicia. He knew that she and Mac owned the Outback still. Maybe he'd drop in for a bite to eat or go over to their house. He wasn't sure which was the best approach. But either way, it had to be done. He went away from the window and passed the mirror that was hanging on the wall. He frowned at his reflection. He was a mess, his hair was in disarray and there was a faint smudges under his eyes. The stubble on his chin reminded him that he hadn't shaved for a while. He guessed he didn't smell that great either. Deciding that a long shower was in order, he headed for the bathroom.

~~~
Lulu awoke the sound of birds chirping. She opened her eyes and squinted at the bright sunlight that filtered through the curtains. The breeze was gently flapping the thin fabric, letting in smells from outside. She had left her window open last night, hoping to cool herself down. She couldn't believe the night that she had.
Darren had taken her home a little after midnight. She was thankful that her family did not wait up for her. The house was dark when Darren walked her to the door. They had stood there, both unsure of what to do. Finally what seemed like an enternity, he bid her good night and pressed a brotherly kiss on her cheek. The disappoinment must have shown on her face because before he walked away he gave another kiss, this time on the lips. She remembered how he looked, his cheeks flushed and his eyes sparkling in the porch light. He had said good night then and left her standing at the door, a warm feeling of happiness spreading over her. She watched as he drove off and waved.
Lulu hugged her teddy bear tightly, unable to keep a smile from her face.
Was this how she was supposed to feel after a first date? All giddy and excited? She didn't know and she couldn't call Cindy either, what if Darren picked up? She could call Georgie, but can she honestly be happy and tell her the wonderful things that happened without the thought of Frisco hanging in the air? She could talk to her mother . . . but they were so distant now . . . then again, this could tighten the bond between them . . . with Lulu beginning to share things . . . that would mean that she was the one to take the first step . . . then again things would never work out if she never put any effort into it. She glanced at the clock beside her bed and sighed. Time to get up. She threw off the covers and swung her feet on the floor. She slipped on a thin robe and went to the bathroom. After she was done, she headed downstairs to find that her mother had left to go the hospital. Her father was sitting at the table with a cup of coffee and the morning paper. Noticing that he wasn't alone anymore, he lifted his head and smiled, "Good morning, sweet pea."
"Morning, dad." Lulu sat across from him and smiled. "Where's Lucky?" She asked.
"He went shopping or something. I don't know. He said he'd be back after lunch."
"Oh."
Luke put down his paper and grinned, "So I hear you had a date last night?"
Lulu blushed, "Yeah."
"You didn't conviently pick the time that I wouldn't be at home, did you?" He asked, his eyes narrowing into a teasing glare.
"Of course not, dad." Lulu pretended to be offended. "How can you think that about me?"
"Hmph. Was he nice to you?" He asked.
Lulu thought back to their dance and the kiss afterwards, "Yes, he was very nice."
"Glad to hear it. Will I be meeting this young man any time soon?"
She nodded, "Tomorrow night, he's taking me out again."
"Gosh darn it, then I'll be here sweet pea, just to check this guy out, if you know what I mean." He waggled his eyebrows suggestively.
Lulu groaned, "Very funny, dad."
He shrugged, a small smile forming on his lips, "I try."
A comfortable silence fell, and neither wanted to say anything to break it. Lulu smiled and reached for the comics. She hadn't felt this comfortable with her father in such a long time. She just hoped that it would last forever.
~~~

Lucky fingered the package in his hand, more confused than ever. He had bought this impusively. He had passed by a store and seen it in the window.

As soon as he laid eyes on it, he knew it was perfect for her. He imagined what her face would like like when he gave it to her. Would she smile and be happy? Maybe it could even lead to a kiss . . . whoa! Hold on a second, what was he thinking? He actually wanted to kiss a vampire? Now he's really losing it, maybe she was right, maybe they shouldn't see eachother anymore. But he couldn't stay away from her, even if he had wanted to. Being around her would not get her out of his system, it only made him want her more . . . He heaved a huge sigh, glaring at the package in hands. He was stupid to get this . . .

Nikolas eyed the package warily, half expecting Lucky to throw it down in disgust. He cleared his throat and leaned forward, "Are you going to tell me what's in it?"

"What?" Startled, Lucky blinked out of his reverie. He gazed at his brother across the table, taking in his surroundings. He was at Kelly's, and they were outside in the courtyard.

"What's in the box, Lucky?" Nikolas repeated.

"This?" Lucky offered a weak smile, "Just something I bought. Nothing important." He shoved it back into the bag and attempted to change the subject. "So what's new with you? Did Lulu tell you about her date yet?"

"No, I haven't talked to her today." Nikolas raised his eyebrows, "Are you trying to change the subject? Because I'm not going to fall for it."

"Me? Why would I do that?" He averted his eyes, afraid that Nikolas could see right through him.

"Is it something for Elizabeth? I saw the way you were smiling when you looked at it. Is it some kinda anniversay present?"

"You never give up, do you?"

"Not when it comes to you." Nikolas winked, "So about this present . . ."

"It's nothing. Let's drop the subject."

"Okay, okay, but if you ever feel the need to unload . . ."

"I know, you're always here to listen."

Nikolas leaned back in his chair, "What are big brothers for?"

"I can think of a few things." Lucky said sarcasticlly.

"Hey, I haven't seen you five years. I have some catching up to do with the wisecracks."

"Rub it in, why don't you?" Lucky muttered.

Nikolas frowned, "You know I didn't mean it that way."

"I know, it's just that my being gone didn't do anyone any good."

"What do you mean?" Nikolas asked, even though he knew the answer.

"Come on, Nikolas, even you can't be that blind. I mean my sister made her feelings perfectly clear when I came back that she had no use for me, that she hated me even. And you've seen my parents, they're not the same people as they used be, everything is so different . . ." He shook his head, "It was a mistake to come back." He whispered, his eyes downcast.

"Don't say that. It's not true and you know it. We are all glad that you're back, even Lulu. She's had a tough childhood. You know that. It's just going to take some time . . ."

"Time is something that I don't have, Nikolas." He exploded, not certain if his anger was directed at his brother or himself. "I'm on vacation. I'll be gone soon and everything will go back to what it was before I came home. I don't have the option to stay longer, I don't have anything . . . "

Water brimmed his eyes and he hastily wiped it away. "It was a mistake to come here."

"If you feel so badly about your family, why don't you just quit? It's not like you're in the mob or anything."

"You wouldn't understand even if I told you. I made my choice five years ago and I have to live with it. Leaving is not an option." He threw some money on the table and got up. "I have to go." He grabbed his bag and disappeared around the corner.

Nikolas rubbed his eyes in frustration. Lucky was trapped in a situation where he couldn't escape from. He was all too familiar with that perdicament. He just hoped that whatever Lucky decides to do works out for him.

~~~
Felicia was upstairs cleaning the bathroom when she heard the doorbell ring. Muttering under her breath, she got up off the floor and rushed downstairs to open the door. Mac was at the police station, Maxie was at the hosptial and Georgie had gone shopping with a friend. She swung open the door to find her friend standing on her doorstep.
"Bobbie! Hi, how are you?" She stepped aside to let her in.
Bobbie smiled and went to the living room. "I'm not disturbing you, am I?" She asked when she noticed that Felicia was wearing grey sweats and a t-shirt. She used an old bandana as a hairband, sweeping her hair away from her face. She wondered how much her friend knew about her ex-husband being back in town. From what she remembered they didn't part very well.
She took off her rubber gloves and smiled, "Oh, I could use a distraction, that's okay." She set them on the table and smiled, "So what brings you by?"
They went to sit on the sofa. "Nothing much, I just wanted to know how you guys are doing."
"We're doing fine. It's great to have everyone I love under one roof again."
"How's Maxie? When I was talking to her yesterday, she seemed kinda upset." She asked, trying to figure out if Felicia knew.
Felica gave here a weird look, "She was fine this morning. She talked to her father last night and she left for the hospital with a smile on her face."
Bobbie's eyes widen, "Oh, so she told you about it?"
"Well, I wouldn't say that, she and Mac have a special bond. They tell eachother things that they tell no one else."
"Oh." She breathed, "She talked to Mac last night."
"Of course she talked to Mac. Who else is her father?" Felica stopped and gave Bobbie a look, "Do you know something that I should know?"
"Me? Why would I know something?" She let out a nervous laugh. Avoiding her gaze, she pretended to pick invisible lint from her green shirt.
"I don't know, you're acting strange all of a sudden."
"Me? Noooo, I just wanted to come by and see how you guys are doing."
Before Felica could respond, the door bell rang. "Excuse me." She got up and cast one more strange look towards Bobbie. She opened the door and almost fainted on the spot. "Frisco!"
~~~

It was hot. Sweat dripped off his forehead as he pushed the lawn mower across the front lawn. He had already discarded his shirt. It was lying in a heap near the front door. Of all the days that his mother wanted the lawn mowed, it had to be the hottest day in the summer so far. He stopped for a minute and squinted up at the sky. The day was clear, not a cloud in the sky. The sun beat heavily down on him. At least I'm getting a great tan, he thought wryly.

"Hey, get back to work, slacker!"

He turned his head and shouted back, "I don't see you out here doing this!"

His sister shrugged, "Mom didn't ask me to mow the lawn." She sat down on the porch steps. "Feel like a break?" She asked, waving a cool bottle of water at him.

"You don't have to ask me twice." He jogged over to her and accepted the water. Taking a huge gulp, he smiled, "That hit the spot. Thanks." He sat on the grass and gazed up at her, "I suppose you want a favour."

Pretending to look wounded, she stuck out her lower lip and pouted. "Why can't I ever do anything nice without there being an ulterior motive?"

"Come on, Cindy, I've know you way to long not to figure out your habits by now."

"Oh, all right." She stuck on a pair of mirrored sunglasses and grinned.

"I do want something."

"Uh huh." He answered knowingly. "What is it?"

"Tell me what happened last night with Lulu."

He snorted. Figures. He watched her as she poured some water on her bare feet. Her short brown hair glistened in the sun, she must have just came out of the shower. "We went out, we had fun. End of story." He got up and headed toward the mower. "I have work to do."

"Not so fast." She jumped up and grabbed his arm. "Come on, tell me what happened."

"If you want to know so bad, why don't you ask Lulu?"

"I would but her dad said she went out. Come on, I'm dying of curiousity."

He gave her a sly grin, "Then I guess you'll have to die then."

"You're no fun." She glared at him through her glasses. Although he couldn't see her eyes, he could just see how annoyed she was. "Fine."

"Good." He gave her a wary look. His sister never gave up so easily, something up.

"If you won't tell me, someone else will."

"What?"

Cindy let go of his arm and waved, "Hi Lulu!"

Darren spun around, suddenly alarmed. He spotted her jogging towards them, her hair pulled back into a loose bun. She wore blue track shorts and a spandax halter top, revealing much of her skin. Her eyes were hidden behind a pair of mirrored sunglasses that was identical to Cindy's. He smiled nervously, suddenly realizing that he wasn't wearing a shirt and that he was all sweaty. He waved to her and ran into the house, wanting to take a shower quick.

Lulu came to a stop in front of Cindy and frowned. "Do I look wierd or something?"

Cindy shook her head, "You look fine to me."

Lulu glanced down at her outfit and wondered if she should have worn something that covered more skin. But it was hot out and she didn't want to wear a t-shirt. She patted her bare stomach, maybe that was it. She used to wear less than this in school and he didn't have a problem with before.

"So . . ." Cindy promted.

"So what?" Lulu asked, still preoccupied with Darren leaving suddenly. Maybe he didn't have a good time last night and wanted to tell her that he didn't want to see her anymore. But why ask her out again? Maybe he just didn't want to hurt her feelings . . .

"Lulu? Hello?" Cindy waved her hand in front of her face, "Are you okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine."

"So how was you're date? Did he kiss you?" Cindy grinned, she just knew that they were going to make a good couple. Most people would find it wierd that their older brother was dating their best friend but Cindy loved the idea of it. Lulu was never a happy child, she just needs a little love and attention. She knew that Darren could give her lots of attention. She also knew that the reason he dated so many girls was because he was afraid of commitment. He didn't have to say it, of course, but she knew.

"The date? It was fun." Lulu was glad that she had worn sunglasses. That way Cindy couldn't see the pain in her eyes.

"Wanna come inside? It's really hot out here. Come on . . . air condition . . ." She conjoled.

It was rather hot out here . . . "Okay, but just for a little bit."

"Great!" Lulu followed her friend into the house, a rush of cool air hitting her skin. She removed her glasses and blinked, her eyes slowly adjusting to the darker light inside the house. "You want a soda?" Lulu nodded and Cindy went into the kitchen to grab her one. A minute she came back out and tossed her a can.

"Thanks." Lulu popped the tab and soda sprayed all over her. "Ahh!" A stream of pop hit her face, drenching her in with the sticky liquid. She held it away from her body, the last of it dripping on the living room carpet. She blinked to find Cindy hiding a smile.

She couldn't hold it in anymore and burst out laughing, "Sorry, I guess I shouldn't have dropped it on the floor!" She choked out, hugging her sides with laughter.

Lulu couldn't help it, she started to laugh too. "I guess this is a good way to cool down!"

They both started laughing again. After a minute, they calmed down and Cindy grabbed her some paper towels. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine." She wiped her face off, "Oh gross! I'm sticky!"

"You can take a shower, and you can borrow some of my clothes too."

"Thanks."

"Go on upstairs, you know the way. I'm going to clean up down here."

"Okay." Lulu went up the stairs, still shaking her head in laughter. She went to the linen closet and pulled out a pink towel. She turned to open the bathroom door when it whooshed open.

Darren jumped back in surprise as he stared at Lulu. She was standing in front of him, soaking wet. Something was dripping off the loose strands of hair, plastering it to her face. He reached out and wiped away a drop from her cheek and grimaced. "Is this pop?"

Lulu nodded, suddenly shy. "Yeah, it kinda exploded downstairs. I was in the line of fire."

"Oh." He couldn't help staring at her face, how pretty she was, the way her eyes just pulled him in. "I guess you want a shower then."

"Yeah, I don't want every misquito to have lunch on me." She joked, her face lighting up.

Darren stepped out of the way to let her pass. She stepped by him and after a moment said, "Are you going to watch me?"

"What?" His eyes bugged out and he could feel his face heating up. "What did you say?"

"You haven't moved. I can't close the door." She explained, the corner of her eyes crinkling in amusement.

"Oh!" He took a step back, "Sorry." She smiled at him and closed the door, leaving him standing in the hallway staring at the closed door, wondering why his heart was hammering in his chest like a runaway train.

~~~
The sun had set a while ago, dropping the temperature somewhat. Lucky stood in front of Liz's house but no one was home. Probably out having dinner, he thought ruefully. He took a seat on the porch steps and decided to wait. He needed to see her, he couldn't explain why, just that he had too. The present he got for her was sitting on the porch railing. Leaning against the side of the house, he waited patiently. She would have to come back sonner or later. He didn't know how long he sat there because the next thing he heard was footsteps coming up the walk.
"Hi."
Lucky stood and stretched. "Hi."
"What are you doing here?" Liz asked, pleased that he had waited for her to come home.
"I just wanted to see you." He gazed into her crystal blue eyes, almost mesmorized by them.
"I see." She could still hear him confessing his feelings in the back of her mind and how terrifying it was to know that she felt the exact same way.
"I wanted to talk to you."
"About what?"
He cleared his throat and picked up the box. "I got this for you." He handed it to her and she took it gingerly.
It was a fairly small box, with floral wrapping paper on the outside. She smiled at him, "What's this for?"
"I just saw it at the store and I thought of you." He shuffled his feet nervously, "Open it."
Not wanting to look too excited, Liz slowly tore the paper. She opened the box, revealing a jeweled pin. It was a rose. She picked it out of the cotton and slowly turned it over. It looked like the one she had lost but upon inspecting it closely, she saw that it wasn't the same. The bloom on this flower curled slightly to the right while the one she had lost curled to the left. She looked at him in surprise, "How did you know?"
He shrugged, "I'm not sure. I was passing by this antique store and they had this displayed in the window. As soon as I saw it, it reminded me of you."
She carefully pinned it to her shirt. "How does it look?"
"It looks great."
"Thank you." She said, a little bit shy.
"You're welcome."
An awkward silence fell, and neither felt that they could fill it.
"Lucky?"
"Yeah?"
She fiddled with hem of her shirt, "There's something that I have to talk to you about."
"Okay."
They went to sit on steps. She looked at him, admiring at how beautiful he was, unsure of how to tell him that it was impossible for them to be together.
"How do you about us?"
"Us?"
"About us, vampires."
"Oh, that." He looked away from her then, staring down at his shoes. How could he tell her that he hunted them? That he wanted some sort of revenge? But then, how could he lie to her? She would surely see through him in an instant. "It's kinda complicated . . ."
"Really?" She reached out and touched his face, forcing him to look at her. "You can tell me, I won't be angry."
Her touch seemed to send him nerves on fire. His thoughts scattered, all he could think about was how good it felt to have her touch him. He raised his hand and gingerly touched her face, she did not pull away. "I . . ."
"Shh." Their faces moved closer. She could feel his breath on her face, she could smell his aftershave, she could hear his heart beat accelerate . . . And she knew that this was dangerous, the elders could be anywhere watching them, ready to strike any moment . . . but all she could think about was how good it would feel to kiss him again.
She tilted her head and their lips touched. Slowly they began to kiss harder. The distance between them shortened as they moved closer together. She slid her arms around his neck, entwining her fingers in his soft hair. He wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her tightly against him. She let out a groan as his tongue parted her lips. She didn't care what happened to her now, she just wanted to be in his arms forever.
He knew now that he loved her, there was no question, no doubt. With her in his arms, he could die right now and be a happy man. She pulled away from him, they were both breathing hard, their faces flushed. Leaning his forehead against hers, he smiled shakily, "Somehow I don't think this is what you wanted to talk about."
Liz closed her eyes, trying to form a coherant thought. This can't work. Being with him would only cause them both a lot of pain and trouble, the reasonable side of her thought. But, the other side argued, the side that said that she loved him, they could be together if they go on the run. He had said that he did that when he was younger, it wouldn't be that hard to pick it up again. They could travel the world together, see everything together. Maybe she could even turn him into a vampire, they would never grow old together, but they would be together forever . . .
"What are you thinking?" He asked, noticing that she was being very quiet.
"Nothing. Just thinking about us and how we could possibley be together."
"Why would it be impossible?"
She sighed and moved away from him. "There are things that you don't know."
"What do I have to know? I just know that I want to be with you."
"There are laws, Lucky. And they can't be broken." She swallowed hard, she couldn't help but think that she had already broken the most important one.
