Lucky hadn’t said a word. He stood up and he was walking around the room. They were all watching him and Liz was asking Jason how he knew but Lucky was tuning him out. How could Stephan do that? He was supposed to love Laura, was it payback? Did Nikolas know? “Did… did Nikolas know?” he asked finally sitting down.
“I can’t tell you for sure. But Lucky I don’t think so. He seemed sincere when you died.”
“Nikolas couldn’t have known Lucky. He’s your brother and he would have said something.” Liz said it sounding disappointed in him.
“He’s known all along?” asked Lucky. “How did you find out?”
“Nikolas was talking to Helena and he told us later that Stephan gives her money but keeps track of what she spends and on what. I had Benny do some checking, you were first at a place a few hours from Port Charles, and it was an abandoned building that Helena and Faison bought. When you were transferred you were even closer to Port Charles. Benny asked around and found out that Stephan had been to the second building.”
“You can’t tell my father.”
“Lucky, Luke has to know. What if Stephan was in this with Helena? We’ll have to take him down too.”
“Sonny you know dad. If someone threatens someone he loves he’s going to take them out. I begged him not to kill Helena but I can’t beg enough for him not to kill Stephan. He’s wanted Stephan dead since he came to Port Charles.”
“Lucky’s right. He stays out of this. You and I will handle it. We’ll head back tonight. Listen last night after you went to bed I talked to Edwin. He’s a former bodyguard of mine and he was the best. He’s moving into the house so he can watch over you three. He’s to go with you anywhere that you go on the island. Your safe here but a little extra help never hurts.”
Lucky woke up. The room was dark and he was alone. He wasn’t even sure when he went to bed or how he got in there. He got up and looked at the time. It was midnight. He wondered where Liz was. He went out in the hall and headed towards Lorenzo’s room. Liz was sitting in a rocking chair holding him and he was crying. “What’s wrong with him?”
“I think he’s coming down with something. I hope not. Tomorrow is his birthday.” She looked down and started trying to sooth their son again.
Lucky watched mesmerized by the sight and then after he didn’t calm down any he walked over to her and put his arms out and said, “Let me try.” He watched as she got up and handed him Lorenzo the boy stopped for a second and looked trustingly into Lucky’s face and then started crying all over again. Lucky wanted to sing to him but didn’t know any little kid songs so he sang-
You’re my sunshine after the rain Lucky got up quietly and laid Lorenzo in his crib. As soon as he put him down the boy rolled over to his belly and sighed peacefully. Lucky touched his head and leaned down to kiss him. “I love you. Dreams of gold little boy.” He whispered so only Renzo would here. When he turned around Liz was gone.
You’re the cure against my fear and my pain
Cause I’m losing my mind when you’re not around
It’s all, it’s all, it’s all because of you.(Lorenzo stopped crying and listened and watched his father.)
You’re my sunshine… oh yeah
Baby I really know by now
Since we met that day
You showed me the way
I felt it then
You gave me love I can’t describe
How much I feel for you
I said baby I should have known by now
Should have been right there whenever you gave me love
And if only you were here
I’d tell you yes I’d tell youYou’re my sunshine after the rain
You’re the cure against my fear and my pain
Cause I’m losing my mind when you’re not around
It’s all, it’s all, it’s all because of you.Honestly could it be you and me
Like it was before neither less or more
Cause when I close my eyes at night
I realize that no one else could ever take your place
I still can feel and it’s so unreal
When you’re touching me kisses endlessly
It’s just a place in the sun where our love’s begun
I miss you yes I miss you oh babyLiz was watching him with tears running down her face. Lorenzo was asleep but he kept singing. He was watching her now.
You’re my sunshine after the rain
You’re the cure against my fear and my pain
Cause I’m losing my mind when you’re not around
It’s all, it’s all, it’s all because of you.If I knew how to tell you what’s on my mind
Make you understand
Then I’d always be there right by your sideYou’re my sunshine after the rain
You’re the cure against my fear and my pain
Cause I’m losing my mind when you’re not around
It’s all, it’s all, it’s all because of you. You’re my sunshine
You’re my sunshine
Oh yeahLiz was sitting on the balcony in her room. That was the first time she heard him sing since the time he sang Deck the Halls for Christmas. She knew he was singing to her, and she loved him for it. But everything was happening so fast. One minute she was finally ready to get on with her life and move back to PC, the next Lucky was there and they were both sent to the island. “Elizabeth?” Lucky was behind her. “Did I do something wrong in there?” When she just shook her head he said, “Why’d you leave then?”
Liz turned around and hugged him. That’s what she had missed the most. The feeling of his arms around her. “Oh Lucky I feel like I’m in a dream and if I am I never want to wake up.” She said into his chest.
Lucky lifted her so she was looking into her eyes. “So do I baby. But this isn’t a dream. I’m here. Will you sit with me?” She nodded and they both sat, Lucky sat against the wall and Liz sat in between his legs with her back to his chest, his arms were around her and they looked out at the ocean and the sky. It was so beautiful here. “I used to…I used to dream about you. Every night I was there I woke up cause we were at the boxcar or my place, on the docks, or dancing on Spook Island, but then you’d disappear. I’d scream for you to come back. I never got much sleep cause I was always afraid to dream again.”
“I dreamed to. The night of the fire I woke up from a dream of us dancing in all kinds of different places. I felt weird you know? So I called but a recording came on and I didn’t understand cause I had just talked to you. So I threw on a sweatshirt and I went to your place. Halfway there I could here the fire engines and I knew, I ran all the way there and I seen the fire. I started to run towards the garage but Taggert stopped me. He said you were gone and I told him you weren’t, I told him I would know, that I would feel it. Then they brought the body out and I tried getting past him to see it but he said I didn’t want to see you like that. Bobbie came and she started screaming. When she saw me she sat down and hugged me. I told her you weren’t dead. I started telling her about New York and all of our plans. They thought I was nuts, they thought I was in denial. But I knew Lucky I knew you were alive. Luke showed up and Jason and Sonny were there. He yelled at them. The he left to take care of your mom.”
“When did you believe them?”
“I went up to Sonny and Jason and asked them where you were. I asked them if they sent you on a job. I was going crazy. Taggert came over and said he found something an asked me to take a look at it. I did. It was your subway token. I asked him if he found it on the floor. More like told him. I wanted him to tell me it was on the floor but he said it was on the body. I fell to the ground crying. Sonny held me. I had to believe it after that. But I always felt you with me Lucky. The dreams after that changed. It was the same dream I had the night of the fire except at the end there were flames and you disappeared.” Liz reached under her shirt and pulled out his necklace. She lifted it over her head and turned so she could put it over his. When it was on she said, “There now it’s where it belongs.”
“I wish this never happened. I wish I were here for you when Lorenzo was born and all the times he woke up at night. Liz why did you move here?”
“Port Charles held to many memories. You were everywhere. And those people every one of them but Jason looked at me like I would fall apart at any minute. I know they love me but I couldn’t handle that. I couldn’t get over you when I saw you everywhere. But Lucky I couldn’t get over you here either.”
“I may sound selfish but I’m glad you didn’t.”
She smiled up at him. “Lucky I want to hear about it. I want you to tell me about it.”
“Elizabeth no!” Said lucky pushing her softly and standing up. “Its not… you shouldn’t have to hear the things they did. It’s all over now.”
“But it still hurts you inside. Please tell me.”
Lucky looked into her eyes. “Well some things don’t change. I still can’t win in an argument with you.”
Liz sat on a chair and Lucky stood staring out at the balcony. “Faison was better than Helena. Don’t get me wrong, I hate him, but he never had me beaten. He used to get off on me being able to open the door with the computer that was in my room. We played chess a lot. If I won I got one question, I never won. He used to show me you, on TV. I saw you twice. I think both times were outside Kelly’s. He gave me a picture of you from my memorial service. I used to look at it and cry. When Helena came she took the picture and ripped it right in front of me. The last time I saw your face was at my memorial service. That was two years ago, it was a tape and she made me watch it. It was hell, watching you my mom and dad talking about me thinking I was dead. Then at the end of the tape I saw you alone in the church repeating the vows I said to you on Valentines Day. After that we moved to another location. I begged guards to help me and they always said no. At one point I almost made it out. I was right about to walk out of the building and into the sunshine, but they grabbed me. That’s when the beatings started. Helena gave me an envelope and said think about that next time you try and run. They were pictures of you. You were bruised and bloody. I knew she probably had them doctored so I stopped trying to run. I took the beatings and her because I didn’t want anything to happen to you. The only reason I left this time is she wasn’t there to know and the guard was helping me out. You know everything else.”
Liz got up and put her arms around him. She knew without looking at him that he was crying. “I love you so much Lucky and I am so sorry this happened to you. You know when they first found out how the fire started that I thought it was my fault. I bought those candles. I went to Sonny to tell him that it wasn’t his and Jason’s fault. I told him it was mine, and he set me straight right away.”
“You love them. Jason and Sonny I mean. I can tell. They helped you a lot and I am so grateful for that.”
“So am I. And your right I do love them. They’re like the big brothers I always wanted. I have one but he don’t count.”
“Do you speak with your family anymore?”
“No. They have never seen Renzo. Gram has but even she’s mad at me. She hasn’t spoken to me since Renzo’s christening. But I have family, yours, and Sonny and Jason, and Emily and Juan.”
“Who does Lorenzo love the most? Who is he most like? What was his first word?”
“Slow down baby we have all night. His favorites are Jason, Sonny, and Luke. He loves everyone but those are his favorites, oh and Roy. Roy got him into computers. As for who he is like, that’s you, he is so like you. His first word was mama, or ma.” They talked for hours, about how it used to be and about what is was like without each other. They talked a lot about Lorenzo and she told him stories of things their son did. Then Liz stood up and held her hand out to him. He took it and stood up. “I want you to come to bed with me.”
“Elizabeth are you sure?”
“Yes I am. Don’t you want to?”
“More then you know. I just want you to be sure.”
“I am.” She took his hand and led him into the bedroom.
(You can guess what happened next.)
