Harry of the Hart

Episode 3
Harry is currently collecting the glasses in the White hart on a salery of 50p an hour.  He has lost his wallet and has only the clothes he arrived in Basingstoke with for possessions.

Kurt had a seductive personality, he picked on the lonely, the down and outs, those desparate for some friendship and it only took a feeble "howdy" from Kurt to give Harry the impression that this was a trustworthy person.  Kurt explained that he had lived in Basingstoke all his life and that everybody he knew thought it was crap but at the same time couldn't think of anywhere else to live.

In truth life was easy for Kurt he lived with his parents and cadged smokes off them and they were more than happy to supply him with money to get him out of the house of an evening.  All he had to do in return was pass some A levels at Queen Mary's and get into a university at the end of it.  Like most teenagers Kurt showed littlle gratitude and was more than happy to steal from his mothers purse whenever the need arose to fund his social life.

Money was important to Kurt, he needed CD's, playstations, pints and mostly cocaine and pills.  To supplement his needs he would often give a free trial to any unsuspecting teenager who showed an interest in the hope that he could sell on his wares at a sizeable profit.  Regretably for Harry he fitted this mold and allowed himself to take just one 'E'.  The effect was to enable Harry to joyously continue his work throughout the evening chattering to the clientel and generally buzzing.  He eventually got chatting to Big Lee Martin who had popped into the pub for a fearsome five pinter.  Which to the layman is five pints as fast as possible before he crashed and burned.

Harry told Lee of his dream to play for West Ham one day and Lee told him that he would be working in the East End the next day and he could have a lift in his van as long as he was waiting outside the pub at 5am the next day.  Harry could not believe his luck, here was his chance to escape the pub and escape Basingstoke and with the amount of energy swirling around in his body he knew that he would be able to stay awake until the early hours of the morning.

The next day Harry shined down the drain pipe and with some horror had to jump from it as the rusty iron came away from the wall.  He stood in silence horrified that Jason might awake and force him back into the pub.  Five am arrived and no sign of Big Lee, a further half hour passed and Harry became disconselet, when the next thing down London Road came a dirty off white van with Internet Heros on the side.  Harry wasn't sure how this could be the plumber he'd met the night before until Lee explained that the name was a throw back to the era before the internet had been invented and consituted a building firm.

Eventually Lee passed Upton Park on his way to Epping.  He dropped Harry outside the Bobby Moore stand and with a wish that it was he that he could have played for the Hammers moved on to fix his pipes for the day. The trouble for Lee was that he was born in Yemen and when he'd been twenty there wasn't much call for Arabs in the Irons line up.

Harry waited at the car park until his namesake Harry Redknapp arrived. "Im a bit special" he annouced "Im the son of Roy Race and I want to play in the Premiership".  Redknapp thought it could be a hoax but remembered the days when a young Roy playing for Melchester had often bought his lad along and thought that it could be true.  "Well if my boy can play for Liverpool and Frank Lampards boy Frank can play for us then you should be ok and from now on you call me Gov or Mr Redknapp, got it."

Two weeks passed and Harry could not have been happier he was playing and training at the West Ham youth acadamy and the reserve team manager had already been to watch him.  That was until the day the drug testers arrived.  All of the lads sat in the changing room with horror as the names were read out of those selected for a test.  Gripper Stimson ran and hid in the toilets and Harry volunteered to take his place knowing that Gripper was a tough lad and Harry would avoid being on Grippers bullying list if he took his place.

What took place next was to change Harry's life for good.  The test was taken and the outcome positive.  The next day Grippers name was all over the papers, he had been expected to make the England centre back position his own in five years now he was a washed up druggie.  Gripper knew exactly who had caused this and marched around to Harry's lodgings and threatened Harry with the worst thrashing he could manage if Harry didn't admit the situation to the club and police.

The reaction in Harry's mind was instantaneous, he neither wanted to face a ban nor the wrath of Gripper and worse still his father who had recently started to call him again would denouce him forever. Harry stopped thinking and ran he ran until he'd left the east end streets behind forever.  He ran for the girl he loved, he ran for the haven where he wouldn't be found and he ran for the only team who would have him with his drugs record. He ran to the White Hart in Basingstoke.  He ran to the 50p an hour job working at Jason's every beck and call and most of all he ran the line on Sunday morning on the first game of the season.
