The Norman Arch, dates from the building of the church in around 1140A.D. It is a fine example of Norman Architecture. The arch itself , forming a perfect framing to the altar, behind. The stone work is inscribed and contains astonishingly for a church, symbols representing male and female organs. The carver of the stone also left his mark, which can still be seen. |
The Arch, the two sides of the arch. the phallic carvings can be seen at the top of the nearest collumn. This carving can also been seen outside the main door. The carver meant no disrespect when creating these symbols, indeed the explanation is quite laudable. When the church was built, most in the congregation would be illiterate. By putting the symbols as he did the stonemason ensured that at any wedding, the bride and the groom would know which side of the church they should stand.Bride on the left, groom on the right. |
