Distance Program

The Distance Program is designed to recognize those Appaloosas competing in Competitive and Endurance Rides. This program records the miles you accumulate while competing in these events.

When you fill out the Distance Program Application and send in your yearly filing fee of $15, the ApHC will enroll that horse in the program. Each additional horse will be another $15. You may sign up at any time. However , only those rides after the date you sign up will count. Upon enrollment, you will be sent ride report forms to be used to keep track of your rides. These forms must be filled out by the ride manager and sent to the ApHC. Only official ride results will be accepted. All results must be turned in to the ApHC by December 15 of the current year to be eligible for year end awards.

The owner(s) and rider(s) of the horse must be current members of the ApHC. Each horse must be a regular or CPO registered Appaloosa and be at least 5 years old. Only rides approved by the ApHC count towards this program. A list of the organizations we approve is available from the Trail & Distance Coordinator. Competitive rides in the open division must be at least 25 miles, and Endurance rides must be at least 50 miles.

A horse will earn a Distance Medallion after completing 350 miles in either Endurance or Competitive rides within a calendar year. Best of Condition, Best Appaloosa, and Sweepstakes winners will receive double mileage for that ride. The horse receives a plaque after accumulating a lifetime mileage of 1,000 of either Competitive or Endurance riding. All mileage must have been accumulated while the horse was enrolled in the ApHC Distance Program. There are also Year End High Mileage awards in both the Endurance and Competitive categories. The final award recognizes the lifetime achievement of the rider. The Chief Joseph Commemorative Award is given when the rider completes 1000 saddle log hours, 10 endurance rides and 10 competitive rides through the ApHC Distance Program.
