The Swift Current Bronco franchise, situated in the southwest corner of Saskatchewan, has become a Western Hockey League success story since returning to the city in 1986. The franchise has been successful financially despite residing in the smallest market in the entire Canadian Hockey League. The city of 16,000, and trading area of 50,000, consistently draws 2100 fans to Bronco games nightly. The Broncos are the main entertainment source for the entire southwest region and are followed by a strong contingent of diehard fans. From a hockey standpoint, the Broncos have done a great deal to earn the support of the community. Since the franchise moved back to Swift Current from Lethbridge in the 1986/87 season, the Broncos have never missed the playoffs and have had winning records for 10 of the past 14 seasons. In fact, no franchise in the Eastern Conference has won more regular season games (504) or more playoff games (58) than the Broncos during this period. This success is apparent in the fact that the Broncos have won two WHL Championships and one Memorial Cup (1989) during this time.
A number of graduating Bronco players have moved on to the professional ranks. Most notable would be Joe Sakic who has gone on to NHL stardom. Other current NHL'ers include Geoff Sanderson, Trent McCleary, Tyler Wright, and Craig Millar. The latest NHL draftee was forward Layne Ulmer who was selected by the Ottawa Senators in the 1999 draft after scoring 40 goals as an 18 year old during the '98/99 season.
Geographically, Swift Current is the halfway point on the TransCanada highway between Medicine Hat and Regina. Most consider Swift Current to be the most centrally located franchise in the Eastern Conference and, as a result, the Broncos enjoy a travel schedule that is as good or better than any other team in the Western Hockey League. The travel schedule allows the club to put a strong emphasis on education. The city is home to the Cypress Hills Regional College which supplies a wide selection of post-secondary courses for older players

About Swift Current

The city of Swift Current began as a Canadian Pacific Railway bridge and water depot after the French traders christened it "Riviere Au Courant". Settlers began arriving from the British Isles, Europe, and Eastern Canada at the turn of the century. These people founded the economy on ranching and farming. In 1914 Swift Current grew into one of the first cities in Saskatchewan.
As the largest center in the southwest region of Saskatchewan, Swift Current is home to schools, health services, social and cultural amenities, business, industry, and sport and recreation. The city has also prioritized tourism in terms of local development. With one of the highest non-local traffic counts along the transCanada #1 Highway.
Swift Current is a city of families and friends. Our continuing efforts to maintain a high quality of life and opportunity for our neighbours is only rivaled by our desire to welcome new families to Swift Current and make new friends.
