Yonkman Signs with Portland

Brandon Wheat King defenseman Nolan Yonkman has agreed to report to the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League.
But, unless his agent and the Washington Capitals can reach an agreement on contract terms, the six foot six inch blueliner will not play any games.
"It will be just to get used to the environment. I'd like to sign a contract, but that's not my area. I leave that up to the professionals. We have talked about a minor league deal for just the rest of this season; but I don't think that would be in mine or the team's best interests. So, I'll practice and have a look around the city. Hopefully, I'm playing there full-time next year," said Yonkman.
Drafted by the Caps in 1999, Yonkman scored six goals and eleven assists in fifty-eight games this past season; split between the Wheat Kings and the Kelowna Rockets. He was acquired in early October along with a third round bantam pick (later used to pick-up Travis Eagles from Prince George) in exchange for Jan Fadrny and Bart Rushmer.
Earlier this week, Milan Bartovic agreed to play out the rest of the regular season and playoffs with the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League. Bartovic scored the game winner in an Americans victory over the Syracuse Crunch on Saturday. That game also saw former Wheatie Darren Van Oene chip in with two assists.
