Ye Olde Medieval Workshop
At some point, Nathan came to school with a metal dowel, pliers, wire cutters, and what appeared to be cloth. On closer inspection, the cloth was made entirely of metal rings. A few of us took interest, and found that anyone could make chain mail. Nathan told us that we could learn how to make chain from arador.com. The two patterns that we are making are the 4 in 1 and the 6 in 1.
Just so you know,
This is 4 in 1,
and this is 6 in 1.
I decided to set up a race between everyone who is making chain mail. The race started 10/12/00 and will end at the end of school. Tom and I were able to hammer out exactly how the race should go, since people are doing different styles and sizes. So, everyone in the race has until the end of school to finish their chain mail. If they finish before, then I will record the date. At the end of school, we will weigh all the armors and figure out who has the highest pounds of steel added per day.
Name: Nathan
Overall Goal: Hauberk
Style: 6 in 1
Why?: Because he's Nathan.
Comments: Nathan works faster than anyone else, and will probably win. However, Nathan hasn't been maintaining the speed that he had when he started, and I have theorized that it might be possible to beat him.
Name: Tom
Overall Goal: Shirt
Style: Insanely dense 6 in 1
Why?: It was too cool not to do
Comments: Tom is doing the impossible. He is making 6 in 1 chain mail with rings that are difficult to make a 4 in 1. His mail is so dense that it has the flexability of solid steel. Also, Tom can be frightening if he gets ahold of some pliers.
Name: Zach
Overall Goal: Vest and gloves.
Style: 6 in 1
Why?: He's always wanted to, but didn't know how.
Comments: Zach works well, but he is often flooded with other school work and can't work on his chain mail. He mostly wants the vest and gloves so that he'll be immune to zaps (poking someone on both sides at the same time) and can hit them back for trying.
Name: Ceres
Overall Goal: Chain mail trench coat.
Style: 4 in 1
Why?: It's a costume for the Medieval Matrix.
Comments: Ceres is possibly the most zealous about making chain mail. He consistantly working on his chain mail, no matter what (excluding wire shortages). Ceres originally started by having Nathan coil his wire, but after about 100 feet of wire, Ceres decided to spring for the metal dowel to coil his own wire. Ceres has also hurt his arms numerous times, recieving cuts, blisters, and sore tendons. Ceres is the only person who is still consistantly working on his chain mail, as all the other members of the chain mail race are bogged down with school work.
Name: Gerdef
Overall Goal: Don't ask me! I'm making it up as I go!.
Style: 8 in 2
Why?: Because it's cool.
Comments: Poor Gerdef started off with a simple 4 in 1 design. However, the rings were too large. Large enough that you could easily stick a pencil right through it. Gerdef didn't realize this until is was too late to start over. So, he doubled over his chain mail so now it's 8 in 2. I think that the outcome may look cooler than 6 in 1.
