( Diospyros sandwicensis)    

Description :

        A tree that grows from 2-10 m(6-33 ft) tall with a dark gray to black, smooth bark that is usually covered with lichen . Alternately arranged leaves are 3-9 cm ( 1.2 –3in) long and 1.5-4cm ( .6-1.6in)  wide  lay flat and have a hairy upper surface.

 

Distribution and ecology:

        Found dry to mesic forests , although can extend to wet forest. Found on all of the main islands except Ni’ihau and kaho’olawe .

 

Cultural uses :

        Hawaiians wrapped lama wood in kapato represent laka the goddess of hula. Its hard dark wood was also used to build temples and sacred fences.
