Lonomea (Sapindus
oahuensis) Endemic
Description:
The
lonomea can grow up to 6-15 m (20-50 ft) in height,
It has a
smooth,white
bark. The young branches are hairy and yellowish Brown. The fruit is
rather large, 2-3 cm (0.8-1.2 in).
Where
is it located:
The
lonomea occurs only on O’ahu and Kauai, 60-610m
(200-2000 ft)
in
moist
to dry forests. The lonomea hosts a native weevil that is endemic to the
Wai’anae Mountains.
Cultural
Uses:
The
Hawaiians used Lonomea seeds as laxative and
Occasionally strung them
into lei. Lonomea fruit pulp produces abundant Suds in water.
