Device Driver
- Simply stated a device driver is a program that
allows a physical device such as a printer, graphics card, CD-ROM, hard
drive, floppy drive (you get the idea) etc to talk to the operating system
or the software programs on your computer. As an example, when you issue
a file save command in a program that program sends that request to the
operating system (Windows, Linux, etc.) and then that operating system
sends the command to the device driver who translates the command code for
the hard drive to do. Once the drive has finished its work it starts
sending communication in the other direction. The following link can be
