When They Took Away...

“First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out--
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the communists
and I did not speak out--
because I was not a communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists--
and I did not speak out--
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak for me.”

--Pastor Martin Niemoller,1892-1984,Victim of the Nazis in Germany

When they took the fourth amendment,
I was silent because I don't deal drugs.
When they took the sixth,
I kept quiet because I know I'm innocent.
When they took the second,
I said nothing because I don't own a gun.

Now they've come for the first amendment,
and I can't say anything at all.
