Misc. Yule Crafts

~ Filled Ornaments ~

clear glass or plastic ornaments

your choice of fillers
{ some suggestions are potpourri, tiny stones, seashells, herbs, holly leaves with their berries, small cinnamon sticks, ribbons, colored embroidery flosses, costume jewelry, confetti or wishes written on colored pieces of paper }

Remove the caps from the ornaments, then fill them with your choice of materials. Replaces caps and hang.

*Be careful NOT to add to many fillers -- the hanger may not hold the ornament if it is too heavy.

~ Pine Cone Fire Starters ~

1 pound paraffin
cinnamon or gingerbread candle scent
candle colour { optional }
pine cones
cooking pot
coffee can
tongs
waxed paper
newspaper

Fill the pot 1/3 full of water. Let it warm on medium heat. Place paraffin in the coffee can and set the can in the pot of water. Leave on stove until the wax melts completely. Remove melted wax from heat and add candle scent.

*While you're waiting for the wax to melt, cover the work area with several thicknesses of newspaper and top off with a sheet of waxed paper.

Use tongs to dip one pine cone at a time into the wax. With each one, chant something like this:

"Bring Yule fires up and make them roar
Help birth the Sun and make him soar
High into the sky at day
To warm or hearts and light the way"

Let the excess drain off, then place on wax paper to harden.

~ Herbal Energy Sachets ~

4 inch fabric squares in
assorted colours and patterns
cinnamon
allspice
cloves
ginger
¼ inch ribbon

In a small bowl, mix the spices until you are pleased with the scent. Place one heaping tablespoon of the mixture in the center of each fabric square. Gather the corners together and secure with a piece of ribbon. Enchant the sachets by saying something like this:

"Fire of spice and fire of Sun
Put nasty doldrums on the run
Send them packing -- do it fast
Bring energy to { name of person } at last"

~ Pressed Herb and Flower Candles ~

large pillar candles in your choice of colours
pressed flowers and herbs appropriate to your magickal purpose
{ available at your local arts and craft stores }
2 blocks of paraffin
1 inch paint brush
waxed paper

Cover the work area with waxed paper, then prepare paraffin as described for the Pine Cone Fire Starters. Press pressed material into the candle, dip the brush into the paraffin and paint over the top. To remove any drips on the candle, dip the brush back into the paraffin, wipe off the excess and paint over the top.

Enchant the candles while waiting for them to dry. An appropriate chant for a candle for increased memory { for example } may be something like:

"Memory flow and serve
{ name of person } well
So data gleaned will stick like gel
Hold information hard and fast
So memory loss is history past"

~ Kitchen Wreath ~

wire ring in desired size
florist's wire
cinnamon sticks
bay leaves
assorted sprigs of kitchen herbs
{ ex. rosemary, thyme, sage, parsley, lavender, lemon balm, mint }
wire cutters
ribbon
cookie cutters, measuring spoons or other kitchen utensils { optional }

Gather together three or four sprigs of the same herb, then wind a short length of wire around the stems to secure them. Place the bunch on the ring. Secure another bunch of herbs in the same fashion, place them around the ring. Continue this fashion until the entire ring is covered. Use small bunches of cinnamon sticks to cover any bare spot, then add kitchen utensils of your choice.
Finish off with a ribbon bow.

*Note: For better flexibility and working ease, soak dried herb sprigs in cold water for one hour before you begin.

To enchant the wreath, say something like this:

"O, circle of herbs and kitchen delights
Work your culinary wonders with power and might
Bring your magick to dishes at the cooks invitation
Making each meal that is served cause for a real celebration"
