Our symbol systems are human-created vocabularies: models, not facts.

Confusing model with fact, "the map with the territory" is a terrible blunder. First, we might be mistaken. At best our comprehension is necessarily partial. If we let our understanding of the God/dess's, or of appropriate behavior, become static and reified, we kill all possibilities of further learning and growth.

Also history warns us that people who felt they had a monoply on truth often took that as a mandate to impose their beliegs and practices on others. If we hold our metaphors lightly, we can avoid both of these dangers. Instead, we keep alive the potentials for lifelong personal growth and continuing development of our traditions across the generations.
