Fundamentalist Pagans |
I do have to comment on the comments concerning teaching and teachers. Many of us broke away from Christianity because we didn't want to parrot a belief that coming to God and having prayers answered had to be done "just so". Most of us on this homeschooling list, I dare say, chose to pull our kids out of the public system because we didn't want them to be parrots under an education system that had to be done "just so". The "one way" and "holier than thou" type of thinking is a put-off for most pagans, right? So, why am I getting the impression from reading some of those posts that a self-education in Paganism is ignorant and to be pitied in comparison to a mentored one? Fundamentalist Pagans? Ack!!!!
The beauty of Paganism is that it celebrates natural diversity. The person who can shake off tradition and think for themselves rather than squawking the squawk that was taught to them is to be uplifted as much as the person who has the stamina to work on degree after degree in formal training. Yes, Virginia, there really is a possibility that some people are born with the gift and are intelligent enough to educate themselves in it. And yet there is that option of formality for those who prefer that method. It's like comparing unschooling and lesson plan schooling -- is one "smarter" than the other? Or is it a matter of choosing what works for the student? ... There is good reason to be wary of any philosophy that says there is only "one way" and "one knowledge" and "one path" to spiritual or practical magick.
