Web Site Usablilty:  A Designer's Guide, Spool, Jared et al. a good book for a brief introduction to navigation, links, readability, layout and graphic design, but some of the techniques are considered historical oddities.  To stay current, I would recommend reviewing websites such as those listed below.

www.internet.com/sections/webdev.html  -  This the web developers dream link list.  It includes every type of website that helps developers, including chat rooms, newsletters and job listings across America.

www.webtechniques.com  -  Based on the magazine, this site has many articles that include lessons, charts and tips for various levels of skills in web development.   They also went deep into web security and how to protect information that is on your website.

www.webreference.com  -  This is a very high tech site that has many tutorials on how to us graphics, build up your design, incorporate e-commerce and programming with java script.

www.webreview.com  -  A main reference on the web for articles and advice on web design and development for the beginner and the advanced by well known authors.

www.websitetips.com/inf/index  -  Very large articles that go into great details about multiple topics (e.g. graphic programs and accessibility) of web development presented in a very usable outline format with bookmarks.
