Armstrongism is a cult within Christianity founded by Herbert W. Armstrong in 1934. The movement that Armstrong founded was called the Worldwide Church of God. The Worldwide Church of God has moved from a cult to holding to the classical Christian theological doctrines in the past decade. This is mainly due to the influence of Hank Hanegraaf, who now writes for the Plain Truth Magazine, which Armstrong used to dispense his doctrine. The splinter groups that still hold to Armstrong's belief write in magazines called Malachi's Message, The Philadelphia Trumpet, and the Key of David. The movement is classified as a cult for several reasons. First of all, they deny the traditional Christian doctrine of the Trinity. They teach that God is a family of several individuals. Armstorng prophesied the return of Christ would occur in 1975. He said that Christ was the only that was ever born again. Members of the movement also believe that the Holy Spirit is merely just an impersonal force. Under Armstrong, the followers of the movement were required to obeserve Jeiwhs rituals and festivals, as well as kosher. Armstrong promoted the idea that resurected believers would live on the new earth while the unbelievers would face judgment. The movement under Armstrong also denied the physical resurrection of Christ. The moevement has dwindled due to Hank Hanegraa'fs efforts to reform it. However, there are still several splinter groups remianing. |
