Christianity was founded 2000 years ago by a Jesus of Nazareth. Christianity is an offspring of the Judaism and has deep Jewish roots. Those Jewish roots are what made Jesus be preceived as who he said he was and brought about the birth of Christianity. Jesus grew up in Nazareth and began his ministry at age 30. Christians use the Bible (both Old Testament and New) as the source and authority for all doctrine. The Bible records many accounts of Jesus at work in his ministry. Jesus started a following around himself claiming to be the Messiah, the anointed one whom God would choose to set the captives free from their sin according to Isaiah 61:1-4. Christians believe that Jesus was born of the Virgin Mary. When Jesus started his following, he was a Jew and his followers as well were devoted to the Jewish faith. The Bible records that he was crucified for claiming to be the Messiah. Yet, after three days in the grave, the Bible records that he rose from the dead and his disciples all saw him in the flesh after his death on the cross. Classical Christian theology holds that Christ is the once for all sacrifice for sin, the Lamb of God who came not to do away with the Jewish law, but rather to fulfill it so that through him those who accept him into their heart as Lord and Saviour might fulfill the law as well. After forty days of walking with his disciples after his death on the cross and resurrection, it is recorded that Jesus ascended into heaven. That is when the movement of Christianity initially started. However, for the first 150 years, it was considered to be a Jewish cult but later managed to become seperate under the influence of Justin Martyr. The word Christian comes from "Christ," the Greek word for Messiah. the above stated is what ther mainstream of Christians agree on along with the doctrines of the trinity which states that God is one God existent in thjree persons that are coexistent and coeternal with each other, that Christ was fully human and fully God and that his life, death, burial, and resurrection were all bodily, and that Jesus is the only name by which men can be saved. There are four major sects within Christianity: Protestants, Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, and Pentecostals. each four of these groupsnow have seperate pages on this site. There are many splinter cult groups that have existed within Christianity as well. |
