Many people probably think that this is just a joke link on my page. However, it is assuredly a true cult that I amspeaking about here. Everyone pretty much knows the story about Elian by now and how he ended up here and the controversy that has surrounded him. The cult of Elian Gonzalez is a cult within the religion of Santeria which is practiced regularly in Cuba and which I have a link to on this site as well under its proper name Regla de Ocha. Elian is viewed as the personification of Eleggua, the Afro-Cuban deity represented by a mischievous child. he has also been a form of Moses and Messiah within the Christian communtiy. Rumors are circulating that Santerian priesrs told Castro, the current dictator of Cuba, that he would be overthrown by a child who had been saved "by the angels of the sea." The prophecy predicts that Castro will die on the first anniversary of the child's appearance on November 25, 2000. Various myths have risen about Elian's ocean encounter. Dolphins have been said to have protected the boy from sharks, they were said to have nudged him back to the inner tube when he slipped off, Elian was said to have reached toward an angel who was floating aboe him when he was rescued. Gonzalez's survival had miraculosu features as he had no scars on his legs and no sunburn nor was he dehydrated . An image of the Virgin Mary is widely believed to have appeared in Elian's bedroom. Another image was detected in an oil stain on a nearby bank window. A woman carrying a cross with a crucified baby doll nailed to it appeared on a TV news program. A local mural shows him as the Christ Child in Virgin Mary's lap. Max Castro, a sociologist at the University of Miami reprots that some refugees who left when Castro took power in 1959 are desperately looking for a sign so that they will overthrow the present regime before they die. Many see Elian as serving in the same role for Cuba as Moses served for the Israelites. It is reported that many fall to their knees in prayer when the boy appears in his yard. These people see Castro as the devil Herod Pharoah who is trying to destroy the divine child. Cuban has been depicted in drawings by Cuban exile artist Alexis Blanco as the Christ Child of the dolphins. Elian is viewed as both a savior figure and a vulnerable miraculous totem who must be saved from Castro. This adds to the political passions swirling around the house- making it almost impossible for federal officials to snatch Elian away without a fight. Many say they are willing to die for Elian. Elian is venerated in Cuba as well. There, he is a symbol of American imperialism, portrayed as a slave in captivity. His school desk has become a shrine, his face peers down from billboards, and vast marches are held in honor of him. His photograph is posted all over his hometown. It seems absurd and rediculous, but many believe that this is a divine child. Will the prophecies by Santerian priests materialize a few months from now. Keep posted for further update as the time draws closer to November 25. |
