Eastern Orthodox Churches are one of the four major sects within Christianity. The Eastern Orthodox Church existence as a seperate sect apart from Catholicism is a result of a Schism in 1054. The three major orders of this sect are bishops, priests, and deacons. There are two minor oder which are subdeacons and readers. Only unmarried priests can become deacons. The spiritual life and administration of Eastern Orthodox churches is governed by the principle of shared responsibility between the clergy and the laity. The services in this sect consist of the Divine Liturgy, the Divine Office, and Occasional Offices. The Divine Office consist of prayers and readings. Occasional Offices include services for baptism or marriage. The Divine Liturgy is called the celebration of the Eucharist. The Eucharist is celebrated according to one of the four rites. All services in the congregation or usually sung or chanted. The sect holds to the same seven sacraments as do Catholics. |
