Hare Krishna is a sect within Hinduism founded in New York in 1965 by AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. The movement is based upon Hindu teachings from the 16th century CE. Hindus view God and Lord Krishna as synonymous. They teach that God is a personal creator and that the souls of all lviing things are a part of the body of God. They teach the idea that Krishna once divided himself up into 16,308 forms in order to mate with 16,308 female cowherds. Some Krishna devotees consider Jesus of Nazareth to be Krishna. Salvation for the followers of the movement is attained through the chanting of Krishna's name constantly, total devotion to Krishna, worshipping images, obeying rules of the movement through many reincarnated lives, etc. The ultimate goal for the Hare Krishna follower is freedom from the cycle of moksha in which human beigns are enmeshed. This comes through enlightenment or "Krishna Consciousness." Those who are unenlightened in one lifetime move on to a new life form which is determined by the sinful acts in the person's life. The movement uses as its scripture and key writings the Back to Godhead Magazine, Prabhupada's translation of and commentaries of Hindu scriptures, and the Bhagavad-Gita as interpreted by Prabhupada. Common practies of followers of the movement include the chanting of the Hare Krishna Mantra publicly, yoga, food offerings, soliciting donations, vegetarian diet. The movement forbids intoxication and gambling. Sex is allowed only for procreation. The movement attracts new followers through holding feast and festivals that portray Indian cultural. Followers are given a new name, and afterwards cut their family ties. |
