II Peter |
||||
The second Epistle of Peter was written between 66-68 AD. This Epistle starts off with the dealing of making one's election and calling sure. It is important for all who feel called by God to ask God to confirm it for them in many ways. I don't think you can ever get enough confirmation but as long as you get some confirmation you know God is in it. This confirmation will vary in the way that it is given by God. Many think that the job of pastors is easy. It is really one of the most difficult jobs you could partake in. I feel that in the church we need to find out who is truly committed by giving them the same test that potential Jewish rabbis are given. Potential Jewish rabbis are always told by the already ordained Rabbis that they never want to become a rabbi because, "It's miserable, it's like Hell, and you will never make it." THat way they get only the most devoted people in their fold. Peter ttells the believers that they are eyewitnesses of Christ majesty as revealed by the prophets. He goes on to speak about the prophecy of scripture and how it was gievn by God in difficult times but then goes on to warn that there were also false prophets among the people. Just like there were false prophets among the people then, there are also False prophets among us today. Peter spends all of chapter two talking about these men. Part of what he uses is mentioned in the book of Jude. Peter warns very strongly agianst the destruction of false teachers and prophets. In chapter 3, Peter speaks about the last days. He writes of how people in the last days will forget that long ago God created the heavens and the earth. This happens as they ponder where the return of Christ that was promised is. The passage reminds believers though that a thousand years are as a day and a day as a thousand years with the Lord. The prophecy about people deliberately forgetting that God created the heavens and the earth may very well be in reference to evolution. Peter warns all people to beware and to be onm their guard at all times. He tells them not to the point that they think on the gloom and the doom but that they guard against all false teachers of whatever kind. He then closes by encouraging them to follow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ. |
