Mormonism is a cult within Christianity that was founded by Joseph Smith in 1824. Joseph Smith claimed a direct visitation from an angel named Moroni who claimed to be a part of an ancient civilization in America. Moroni further told Joseph Smith that Jesus came to America when Moroni was alive as a human. Moroni revealed to Joseph Smith where secert plates were hidden in Pennsylvania and Joseph Smith went to the place where they were located and took them out. Moroni also supplied Joseph Smith with a pair of glasses which would help him and only him to be able to interpret the writings of the plates. Joseph Smith then interpreted the writings and then began to develop a following. Mormonism in the 19th century underwent a lot of persecution. After Joseph Smith developed his following, he traveled West with his followers in a quest for a promised land for the people he was leading. Joseph Smith ran for governor of Utah in the 1840's. Eventually, his campaign ended as he was placed in prison and many of his followers were placed in prison as well. Mormonism still managed to survive though. One of the early practices in Mormonism was the practice of having multiple wives. This practice still exists in small splinter groups of Mormonism today, but it pretty much has been condemned by the Mormon Church. The mormon church is headed by a prophet who is said to lead for that generation, who is usually the eldest member of the Mormon church. The ultimate goal for the Mormon is to eventually attain a state of godhood. Mormons believe that God himself started off as a man but over time he worked his way up to being a god. Therefore in the same way, all humans can work there way up to being a god. Mormons believe in three states of godhood of which people go after they die depending on the number of good works they do in their life. Mormons also are baptized regularly on behalf of their dead ancestors because they believe that through doing such their ancestors will be redeemed. Mormons use as their scriptures: The Bible, the Book of Mormon which is translated from the plates found by Joseph Smith, and The Pearl of Great Price. |
