Nahum |
||||
Nahum is a book of the minor prophets that has one central focus. Taht is a prophecy against the city of Ninevah. Nahum speaks of the Lord as restoring the fortune of Jacob while destroying the fortune of Ninevah. This book more than likely refers to the fact that Ninevah was a major Assyrian metropolis at this time and the Assyrians had conquered the 100 years before Nahum was written. Now the Lord speaks through Nahum and warns the people of Ninevah that the cup of their wrath is now full and that he is going to bring judgment upon them. This prophecy was fulfilled in 612 Bc when Babylon swept through and started taking over the Assyrian Empire as they destoryed the city of Ninevah which as prophesied would never be rebuilt again. Nahum speaks of how Ninevah had grown in wealth and economy and basically says that all that will soon come to an end. After the city's destruction by the babylonians in 612 BC, it became a desolate area for animals and birds. What we can get from Nahum is that he spoke his prophecies against a prosperous nation which had filled up their cup of wrath against the people of God. Even though the city was prosperous, Nahum did not hesitate to speak out like we as Christians often fail to especially in the midst of a very prosperous America. It is time that we as Christians capture the zeal that Nahum had and that we warn the world that riches will get them nowhere if they do not have a relationship with Jesus Christ. |
