New Age movement

The New Age movement is a religion popularized by Shirley Maclaine in the 1980's and 90's.  New Agers claim that their faith is more of a philosophy of life than a religion.  Belifs within the New Age movement vary.  New Agers use relative passages from all the scriptures of all the religions of the world.  They also look at the writings of people whose work may not be considered as scripture by a particular religion, but that they fell enlightens the soul.  New Age is a pantheistic religion in that they believe that God is everything and everything is God.  They view God as an impersonal force or principle that governs all of life.  They believe that huimans are a part of God and therefore set a goal for humans to become united with God in their souls.  This happens through the buildup of good works over bad works so that through sevarl lifetimes and reincarnation they may attain a state of godhood.  New Agers teach that everyone has the ability to develop a "Christ Consciousness."  This is done through practices such as meditation, self-awareness, Transcendental Meditation and spirit-guides.  New Agers believe that there is a Spirit which governs the minds of each individual as a psyhic force that helps humans to tap into the power of the supernatural.  They believe that man is divine and can experience psychic phenomena.  Followers of the movement strive for world unity, peace and holistic health.  Popular pracices within the New Age movement are youga, channeling, visualization, trances, the use of tarot cards, and the contact of dead spirits.  The New Age movement can best be defined as a religious movement that embraces all religious traditions of the world believing that neither one is better than another but rather that there is beauty in each tradition and therefore there is no reason why all the religions of the world can not come together in harmony.  New Age is a polytheistic religion.  It embrcaes a lot of relgious cultures from the past such as Egyptian and Greco-Roman mythology, etc.  New Agers use crystals to get in harmony with God (whom they see as the force of energy behind all the actions of the universe) through spirit-contacts and for developing a higher consciousness.  They believe that each individual has the ability to attain a state of godhood.
