Nicheren Shoshu Buddhism

Nicheren Shoshu Buddhism is a Buddhist cult founded in Japanin 1253 by Nicheren Daishonin.  The headquarters for the movement is now located on Mt. Fuji near Tokyo.  Followers of the movement believe that the mystic law of cause and effect is the essence of all reality.  They believe that one is ultimately saved through attaining enlightenment, prosperity, and healing, and through chanting nam-myaho-renge-kyo- a mantra expressing devotion to the law of karma.  The movement differs from traditional Buddhism in that it totally rejects the idea of desirelessness and rather teaches that enlightenment is attained through fulfilling the desire for self-gratification.  They believe thyat a person is repeatedly reincarnated until they ultimately realize and tap into their Buddha nature.  The movement use the Lotus Sutra (the words of which they attribute to the historical Buddha).  They also use major writings of Nicheren for scripture.  The group has practices such as group chanting of mantra of devotion out of the law of the Lotus Sutra.  Followers also worship a parchment called the Gohanzen, which contains the names of deities.
