Philippians |
||||
Paul wrote to the church at Phillipi in 63 AD. He apparently wrote to thank the Phillipians for the prayers for him as he travels on his journey. Paul stresses the importance of discernment and of being blameless before Christ. Paul talks about how some preach Christ out of selfish ambition. He tells the Phillipians that the important thing is that the gospel is preached. Paul talks about his desire to die and be with Christ but also his desire to help out with the church. Paul encourages the Phillipians to conduct themselves in a manner of conduct worthy of the gospel. he tells them to stand firm in one faith and one Spirit. He also reflects some on the fact that suffering is a part of the Christian faith. He talks about the humility of Christ and tells the church at Phillipi to remain humble. Apparently, the church might have had some problems with pride in their support of Paul and thus might have elevated themselves above other churches which is something that does happen today. Paul then mentions that Timothy will be visiting them soon. He proceeds to speak of how there is no confidence in the flesh and how though he basically sins on a daily basis, he strives each day to be more and more conformed to the image of ChristHe once again points out suffering as a part of this process. He speaks of those who live as enemies of the gospel as worshipping their stomach as a god. The stomach is the source of appetite. He concludes by once again thanking them for their contribution to his ministry and assures them that God will bless them greatly. He speaks of how he knows he can do all things through the strength of which Christ supplies him. He then ends the book with final greetings. |
