Protestantism

Protestantism is one of the four main sects and one of the two most dominant sects in Christianity.  Protestants deny the Catholic concept of Apostolic succession, believe that a person should not be baptized until they have made a commitment to Christ, stress the inerrancy of the Bible. Most Prostestant churches operate under a democratic structure in which the church leaders are elected by a borad of clergymen.  They believe that access to God is through Jesus alone.  They believe that hell is a literal place of physical torture.  They deny the infallibility of the pope and the doctrine that Mary was sinless.  Protetsants view communion as a memorial meal and that Christ's blood and body are only symbolically present during the partaking.  Protestants deny the Catholic elevation of Mary who is venerated by Catholics, but is simply acknowledged as the mother of Jesus by Protestants.  Protestants pray to God only through Jesus.  They deny the catholic doctrine of purgatory.  Most Protestants believe that once a person is saved, they can not lose their salvation.  However, this depends on whether or not the Protestant is Arminian or Calvinist which are two sects within Protestantism.  They believe that sacraments are simply symbols of grace and that salvation is achieved through faith alone.  Protestants believe that the visibility of the church is seen through the fellowship of all believers.  Protestants only hold to two sacraments which are Baptism and communion.
