Rastafarinaism is a Jewish cult which was founded in the 19th century by Marcus Garvey. The followers of the movement thing that Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia is actually the Messiah. They base this belief upon a story in the Kebra Negasi (chronicles of Ethiopia) which asserts that the Queen of Sheba (Modern Ethiopia) as mentioned in the Bible in I Kings 10 had a son that came out of her visit with Solomon. Solomon was descended from the tribe of Judah and therefore the Messsianic prophecies occurring in the Bible about the Messiah coming from the tribe of Judah are fulfilled in Haile Selassie. Rastafarin writings prophesied the coming of a black Messiah alkmost a century before Haile Selassie was known. Followers believe that their scripture prophesied him as "the one with the hair whose haed was like wool, and whose feet was like burning bronze. Selassie died in the last half of the twentieth century. This at first was not accepted by Rastafarians who thought that this weas just an evil scheme by White Man to destroy the notion of a Black Messiah. Once they realized his death was inevitable, they expalined that the is still alive because the atoms of his body spread throughout the world and have now become part of new babies. Rasta is the name used by Rastafarians to refer to God. They teach that Ethiopia is Rasta's heaven on earth. Rastafarian's feel that their ancestors did something along the road to offend Rasta and therefore he xiled his peoplem itno slavery in Jamaica. The Rastfarians view the white man as the Babylon that the Bible speaks about. Effort of Rastafarinas is to try to remind blacks of their heritage and to stand up agaiunst whites. They believe that in later times the God Rasta will bring the African people back to Ethiopia which is their Promised Land. They believe that nearly 3000 years ago, Jews came to Ethiopia with Solomon and the Queen of Sheba's son and brought withb them the ark of the covenant where they established a tabernacle and started the belief of monotheism in Africa. Rastafarians use mostly the Bible and other writings by some revered leaders within their movement. They use marijuana for medicinal purposes and for their annual Nyabangi celebration. They eat only I-tal food. That is food that is not touched by chemicals. They use the colors red, black, and green as symbols of their culture. Red stands for the blood of the martyrs who have suffered for the movement. green stands for the vegetation in Ethiopia, while black stands for the African people. They were dreadlocks as a symbol of their roots. They use the term "Lion of Judah" to refer to Haile Selassie. Though Haile selassie is viewed Rastafarians as the Messiah, he himself was a devout Christian and rejected the idea of being the "Black Man's Messiah." |
