Song of Solomon |
||||
One of the most controversial books of the Bible to interpret throughout history has been the book of Song of Solomon. This book has been interpreted in various ways and has by many people been rejected as the Playboy Centerfold of ancient Israel. One interpretation of the book as it speaks of Solomon and the lover of his youth, his first love- is that Solomon is representative of God while his lover is representative of the church. One person who has rediculously taken this book out of context in abrupt fashion is Marilyn Agee, the false prophetess of the late 20th century who has now predicted the the premillenial dispensational rapture of the church on four different occasions in the past three years. Speaking of Solomon as God in this passage is rediculous and complete bliss ignorance due to the fact that it makes note of Solomon's 60 wives and 80 concubines. If Solomon represents God in this passage, then God's been doing a lot of cheating on his people and he has many other beloves flooding around in space somewhere. The most accurate interpretation of this book is the beauty and the sanctity established by God for a couple to experience sexual intercourse as an act of marital love for each other. Song of Solomon contains a good account of the ideal relationship that any husband and wife who truly love each other should have. While it does not fit in totally with saying that Solomon would represent God, there are some passages that you can apply along those lines when you look at the symbolism. For example, Song of Solomon 7:10-14 represents the relationship that anyone should have with God if they truly love him. One of the relationships of Christians to God is as the bride of Christ. Verse 10 of Song of Solomon speaks of how the beloved woman belongs to her lover Solomon and how his desire is for her much like God's desire is for us. The next couple of verses then speak of the lover and her husband going several places. God goes with his people everywhere they go. Verse 14, speaks about mandrakes which was the ancient Israelite version of Viagra. Viagra is a new drug on the market that gives people who have lost desire for intimacy the desire to have intimacy. At least in the act of sexual intercourse. One thing that God asks of us and not in the sexual sense is for intimacy. As Christians,we have what I like to call spiritual viagra which gets us intimate with God for a short period of time. For most people, this hearing an awesome evangelist at church or going to a camp meeting and having a mountaintop experience or going on overseas mission trips. Yes indeed you come back and you claim that you have developed a new fire for God that is leading you into further intimacy with him, but much like that desire lasts when people take viagra, it only stays around for a short time and in a few short weeks the fire for God that you claimed to have developed is gone and its right back to the same old ordinary routine until the next time you mangae to acquire a dose of some spiritual viagra. Once again, I do not mean this at all in the sexual sense. Intimacy goes far beyond the bedroom. It also involves your cooperation with your mate and your ability to be there and help him/her in their time of desperate need. It's not something you need to take any bit of viagra for because being intimate with somebody is simply living out your commitment of love not because you took some crummy vow but because you want to be there for that person and to help them through all their struggles in life and you want, and if they are intimate with you they will do the same for you. Intimacy is the getting rid of habits that they don't like and it is the complete transformation of a lifestyle in order to satisfy your beloved because you want them to be happy and pleased with you. Based on the intimacy scale I have mentioned above, how about telling me how you would rate your intimate relationship with God. |
