Transcendental Meditation is a Hindu sect founded by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in California in 1959. The headquarters for the sect is now located in Wasington D.C. The movement is based on Hinduism and youga. The movement teaches that all of creation comprises the body of God and that all creation is divine. The Supreme Being of the universe is viewed as impersonal. They see all of creation as one. The movement stresses the idea that humans have forgotten that they possess an inner divinity. They teach that salvation consists of doing good in excess of evil in order to evolve to the highest state (final union of the self with Brahman) through reincarnation. They believe that Karma is a at work until you become one with the body of Brahman. The movement uses as its scriptures the Bhagavad-Gita, Meditation of founder, Science of Being and Art of Living, and other writings by Yogi. They recite mantra (words associated with a Hindu god), meditate twice a day to relax and achieve union with Brahman. Their practices occur in classroom settings at Maharishi University in Iowa. Particular practices occurring within this classroom setting are levitation and invisibility. Followers of the movement also practice yoga, Hindu astrology, use crystals, and offer fruit, flowers and cloth of clothes as idol worship for the dead teacher of Mahirishi Mahesh Yogi. |
