Unity School of Christianity
The Unity School of Christianity was founded by Charles and Myrtle Fillmore in Kansas City, Missouri in 1889. The movement now has its headquarters in Unity Village, Missouri. The Unity School of Christianity teaches that God in an invisible impersonal power. The word God is considered as interchangeable with principle, law, being, mind. Gid is viewed as being in everything just like the soul is in the body. The Unity School is a cult within Christianity. They deny the traditional Christian doctrine of the Trinity. They teach that Jesus was not Christ, but rather had a Christ consciousness. Yet, that is something that each human being possesses. Christ Consciousness is a state of perection that is existent in every person. They teach that Jesus was reincarnated many times and that he was one who was in search of his own salvation and that he realized that salvation when he attained Christ Consciousness. They deny the tradtional Christian view of Christ's sacrifice for the sins of all humankind on the cross. They also deny the tradtional views of the resurrection and the second coming. They teach that the Holy Spirit is a law that puts God in action and a definite thought existent within the mind of each man. Salvation is attained through realizing you are a son of God and through tapping into Christ Consciousness. There is no such thing as evil, death, devil, sin, poverty, or old age. The spirit is viewed as real, while matter is viewed as surreal. They teach that a person is reincarnated until they attain Christ Consciousness. They teach that death is the result of wrong thinking and that each individual is reincarnated until they reach enlightenment. There is no literal heaven or hell. The movement implores the use of key writings such as Unity Magazine, Lessons in Truth, the Metaphysical Bible Dictionary, the Bible which is interpreted with hidden meanings. The movement also publishes a nationwide devotional called the Daily Word.
