Zoroastrianism is a religion that was founded in the early to mid 1st millenium BCE. It was founded by a Persian prophet named Zoroaster. The religion teaches a belief in one Supreme God, called Ahura Mazda, who created all things. All people are commanded to follow and obey the teachings of Ahura Mazda, who will judge them at the end of time. The religion teaches that Ahura Mazda has an enemy called Angra Mainyu, who is the spirit of evil. Zoroastrians believe that the world and the lives of everyone in it represent a battleground. In this battleground, a struggle takes place between evil and good, represented by Ahura Mazda, and evil which is represented by Angra Mainyu. All people are called upon to join the battle on the side of good, which will win at the end of time. Each person at death is judged acoording to the side that he or she chose. A sacred book called the Avesta contains the basic teachings of the religion. Zoroastrianism thrived in Persia from 550 to 330 BCE. The religion then lost some of its vitality, but ir revived in new forms from the 200's to 600's CE. In about 650 CE, the Muslims conquered Persia and forbade the practice of Zoroastrianism. Some people still continue to follow the religion though. Today, Zoroastrianism is practiced only by a small group in Iran and by a people in India called Parsis. |
